1930s house Amsterdam South

A house in Amsterdam South, NL. The original 1930s house structure had many rooms, porches and doors due to resident staff. The existing layout has been completely demolished and the new layout “fits” a modern family. The top floor, a former floor with storage, has been merged with the underlying floor. The result is a spacious and transparent house with lots of light.

In the center of the house is a large atrium and staircase with an electric glass sliding roof above which is the access to the roof terrace. This brings natural light into the living room. Constructions and pipes are concealed in a room-separating piece of furniture, which also includes the kitchen. The white laser-cut fronts run from floor to ceiling. The pattern provides a dynamic alternation of open and closed cabinets, and functions as an integrated handle. The transparent “skin” of the object gives depth to the volume. The other furniture will go along with this, especially the “chair one” chairs from Grcic. A wooden wall with a large sliding door separates the living room on the first floor from the entrance hall and adjoining bedrooms. The wooden wall continues into the atrium and the second floors.
