Butlers Wharf, Tower Bridge Riverside apartment

We were approached by our clients to re design their three bedroom London residence into an apartment full of both character and edge. It being their second home, they were eager to create a unique and bold interior using a variety of materials.

On entry you are immediately greeted with a wide and white hallway with joins both sides of the apartment. The hallway was opened up at the riverside end to allow more light into the darker Shad Thames end which creates a calming centre for the whole space. The interior is distinguished by beautiful classicly designed bespoke furniture and an emphasis on the use of natural materials such as brass, copper, wood and horn throughout. To elevate the apartment we chose a striking colour palette which is stunningly complemented by the clients’ extensive personal art collection.

The living area is screened off by a bespoke glass partition which contains the kitchen dining and living areas, so the bedrooms can be calm quiet sancturary’s when required. In the open plan living area we decided on a scheme of copper and indigo tones, creating a moody and luxurious living space, perfect for both entertaining and relaxing.  Bespoke joinery with copper inlays is the key element tying everything together in the living room.  A low L-shaped sofa in a dark indigo linen is covered in scatter cushions in shades of copper and cream.  A large tan leather footstool serves as a coffee table and place for the owners to put their drinks and books. To complement the scheme, while providing extra seating, are two tub chairs in luxurious cream velvet and metallic copper and gold fabric behind the sofa each framed by a giant floor standing copper angelposie lamp.  The star of the room for me however is the stunning Ava dining table from Tom Faulkner with a patinated copper base and smokey glass top which was placed immediately outside the entrance to the kitchen. To echo the shape of the dining table and create more of a zen space we arched the kitchen wall so the walk into the living space is interesting without any sharp corners.

To tie in with the living room scheme, in the open plan kitchen, we selected a bold grey blue lacquer for the cabinets which is picked up in the striking grey veins of the statuario marble worktop and splash back.  This is contrasted with the stunning copper bar which separates the kitchen from the living room.  By removing the upper half of the kitchen wall to allow light from the riverside to flood in, we added the copper bar top as a feature and to tie in with the rest of the open plan living area.

The study, which is separated from the hallway by a bespoke glass wall, to again let light into this listed warehouse building, is a gorgeous mix of brass, dark wood and blues. The bespoke desk unit that fills the entire wall was designed with plenty of shelving for books, office equipment and the owners ornaments. This joinery was accentuated with brass plates which act as book ends. LED lights are incorporated into the unit to provide defused light when working at night. It also highlights the clients accessories and ornaments. The two desk chairs in dark blue and ochre add fun and a splash of contrasting colour with two different types of material adorning each chair. The inclusion of a sofa bed in the room allows the room to be converted into a spare guest room when needed while providing a greater space and relaxed seating when required.

The master bedroom with bespoke joinery and furnishings is dipped in an array of turquoise and blue whilst the guest bedroom is a calm purple and pearl oasis. Both feature luxurious super king size beds with tall headboards and dark wood bedside cabinets and dressing tables.

The overall result is a wonderfully calm yet striking design.
