From dated home to modern villa
After purchasing a 1970s home, our client approached us to create a total metamorphosis. The dated existing house needed to be transformed into a sustainable and modern villa appropriate for our times. The existing home was basically solidly built and the spacious layout of the home made a lot possible. In our design, we took into account the preservation of as many structural components as possible. The existing roof disappeared in our design and we placed a new volume in this spot by adding a light building structure (by wood frame construction). All existing exterior walls remained intact and we insulated the exterior and finished it with stone strips, stucco and wood for a warm accent. The architectural appearance of the villa is subdued and quite closed at the front. At the rear, there is much openness and connection to the leafy garden and surroundings. We expanded the rear of the house on two sides. On one side, the master bedroom is positioned overlooking the gigantic garden. On the other side, the dining table was positioned which is surrounded on three sides by a glass front. This maximizes the experience of the garden and adjacent swimming pond. Moreover, there is plenty of natural light in this room. Between the two extensions is the covered terrace. This has a slatted roof so there is plenty of natural light coming in toward the kitchen. At the same time, it is also very practical to keep out the sun/heat and possible rain on the patio.
