Project Curaçao Nomad sailing on roof terrace
Sailing sculpture Curaçao – a high flyer above the coral sea
With its wings spread, this sailing sculpture floats above the deep blue coral sea of Curaçao and the colorful city of Willemstad … It landed on the roof terrace of a contemporary apartment with a view of the world’s bluest sea. This example of contemporary architecture was built in the middle of a historic neighborhood in Willemstad, dating from the early 18th-century colonial period.
The sailing sculpture by architect Amandus VanQuaille is a celebration of the ecstatic life in Curaçao combined with the serenity of family life. This high flyer spans an outdoor kitchen and dining area on the roof overlooking the immensely blue sea. The special place combines the luxury of the relaxing view of the sea with the vibrant life of the colonial city center and the local color. The exorbitant equatorial sun is protected, but the special fabric in PTFE makes the light sparkle and filters out the UV light thanks to a special coating in titanium dioxide.
Sculpturality and technicality go hand in hand here. The overall shape and details have been designed and calculated to withstand the extremely harsh winds and UV light of this island. It has been built to look into the elements of nature for decades.
