Project Sint-Martens-Latem
This home with practice space is very special to JUMA, as it is the design for their own home.
The fact that the plot is located in the second building line is very appealing to them because of the luxuriant surrounding greenery and the privacy it brings. The long driveway opens onto a cozy, receptive courtyard with 3 volumes adjacent to it that are connected. On the one hand there is the double garage with wooden cladding, on the other there is the architect’s office with separate access and finally there is the house itself. The 3 volumes each vary in height resulting in a very readable design.
The floor plan of the house is very expansive, as JUMA has a weakness for long-stretched, low forms. Even the children’s bedrooms are on the ground floor. Only the master bedroom with dressing room and bathroom is located upstairs as a kind of separate suite.
The orientation of the house is not ideal but JUMA saw this as a challenge rather than a disadvantage. Designing a glazed passerelle between kitchen and living space creates a sort of in-between garden/patio. That way, more varied views are also obtained instead of just focusing on the backyard.
