A small farmstead once stood on this site in the Antwerp Kempen region. In the 1970s, a large square farmstead was built around it, constructed entirely of reclaimed materials. It was a beautiful home that, however, was in dire need of renovation, both in terms of modern comfort and technology and interior design.
Modern Household Comfort
The old windows were replaced, as was the heating system. Custom lighting was installed everywhere and a modern home automation system made the house meet today’s requirements. The floors were broken up to install underfloor heating, but the architect recovered the old church walls and terra cotta tiles. Where the little-used dining room once was, came a cozy living kitchen with an AGA stove in the old fireplace.
Restoration while maintaining authenticity
The dark beams, stairs and doors, were sandblasted and patinated in a light color giving the house a fresh and timeless look. To preserve the authentic character, the architect used rough plaster with rounded corners. New materials were aged, such as the bathroom lavabo in natural stone that was acidified and into which fine lines were milled. Loose cabinet blocks show off the vaults and ceilings beautifully.
