Sleek outdoor room with slatted roof and fireplace
This white home located in a quiet Flemish residential neighborhood offers an open living space that flows seamlessly into a sleek outdoor room. Thanks to the outdoor fireplace and lowerable side elements in the patio cover, residents no longer have to wait for summer to enjoy quality outdoor moments.
Interior designer Kurt Demeulemeester was tasked with creating more living space both inside and out with a focus on openness and natural light. He accomplished this by increasing the living space by several additional square feet and by replacing the old arched window with roof overhang with a new large sliding window. But it is above all the wall cabinet, made of white and black lacquered mdf and equipped with indirect LED lighting, that optically enlarges the living space.
Demeulemeester saw the adjoining terrace as an extension of the living space, and the owners take full advantage of it. The “Camargue” patio canopy, fully customized by Renson, allows sunlight to be controlled at the touch of a button. With slats closed, residents also no longer need to flee inside in the event of a splash of rain. The perpendicular positioning of the slats on the south-facing rear façade ensures that they continue to enjoy plenty of daylight indoors as well. But when the sun is too bright, the slatted roof also proves its usefulness as an awning for the home.
Kurt Demeulemeester worked out a tight concept for this project in which he let the horizontal lines of the wall furniture in the living space continue on the recessed wall under the terrace roof. This outdoor wall was furnished with closet space and a built-in outdoor fireplace from Metalfire that can also be used as a barbecue. For this wall, he chose full-core because of its weather-resistant qualities. The black and white combination returns here as well and so that inside and outside blend seamlessly.
The two remaining open sides of the patio cover are equipped with screens that can be lowered. This creates a cozy cocoon, sheltered from sun and/or wind. Combined with dimmable LED lighting in the slats, residents now use the patio until late at night.
