What does the higher gas price mean for my gas fireplace?

What does the higher gas price mean for my gas fireplace?

In recent weeks we have been hearing the most varied stories about gas prices in the Netherlands. But what does spending an evening cozy in front of the gas fireplace cost these days? In most cases, the cost still does not exceed €3 per evening. So an evening of conviviality will cost you less than a good glass of wine.

Of course, the consumption of a gas fireplace depends on the heating behavior and power of a fireplace or stove. When a fireplace is always used on the highest setting, it naturally consumes more gas than when it burns on a lower setting. In addition, the power of the fireplace and the use function play a role; do you use the fireplace for atmosphere or also as (additional) heating. In addition, the price of gas plays into this. The rate of a m3 of gas depends on your contract and currently varies between €0.80 and €2.79.

As read above, the consumption of a gas fireplace depends on several factors. Nevertheless, to provide some clarity, we will outline an example of a gas fireplace with an output of +/- 7 kW. The most commonly sold gas fireplaces have an output of about 7 to 8 kW at the highest setting. A gas fireplace with an output of +/- 7 kW consumes about 1 cubic meter of gas per hour while burning at full setting. Because of the heat output at high power, a gas fireplace is almost never used at full setting.

Assuming a fireplace with a capacity of 7 kW and 3 hours of stoking at full setting, with a gas price of €1.74 (average rate February 2022 according to Nibud), using the fireplace would cost €5.25 per evening. However, the fireplace is almost never used at full setting, but at 50 to 60% of it. Calculating with this, the cost still does not exceed €3.25 per evening!

Of course, this all depends on gas prices at your own gas supplier. By the way, this does not yet take into account that the central heating can be used less at these times, especially if you normally heat with the living room. Here you can save the weather costs.
