In this modern new-build house with 1930s influence, the street-facing volume reads in brick and a distinct gable front, while the recessed part is stripped down to steel, black zinc and afrormosia wood. That shift in material and position gives the house its rhythm. From the start, the project had to wait through demolition, soil remediation and permit procedures, so the design matured before construction could begin.

Brick on the street, a lighter frame behind it

The front volume is deliberately tied to the street. Brick brings the body of the house into the local building language, and the gable front repeats a familiar 1930s outline without copying it outright. Set behind this, the modern mass pulls back by several metres. Its steel frame and black zinc roof give the second volume a sharper edge, while afrormosia wood softens the darker surfaces. Black-grey aluminium frames and black zinc dormers continue that line, keeping the profile crisp against the sky.

Seen from outside, the house works through layers rather than one fixed face. The brick portion anchors the composition, while the recessed volume adds depth and shadow. At the rear, a steel structure above the roof terrace reintroduces the same gable shape in a lighter way, almost as a line drawn in the air. The form is repeated, but not frozen. That is where the modern new-build house with 1930s influence becomes most legible: in the way one roofline echoes another across different materials.

A gable front reworked in steel and zinc

The gable front is not treated as decoration. It is used as a spatial device that links the new-build house to its setting while still allowing a contemporary reading. The street-facing brick mass takes the lead, but the recessed volume announces itself with steel and black zinc rather than heavy masonry. The result is direct and layered at once. Even the roof details keep that conversation going, with dark edges and the vertical grain of timber adding contrast to the brickwork and metal surfaces.

On the rear elevation, the geometry becomes more open. The steel frame above the terrace repeats the gable silhouette and turns it into a lighter outline. Large glazing sits below it, so the shape does not close the house off from the garden. Instead, it hovers above the openings and makes the upper edge of the building visible from inside and outside. That balance between solid brick and lighter metal framing is one of the most striking parts of the modern new-build house with 1930s influence.

Light, height and a kitchen that opens to the garden

Inside, the house expands around height differences. A void at the front façade, an open staircase and changes in floor level all make the route through the house visible. The kitchen is set to a free height of 2900 mm, while the lowered floor on the garden side increases that to 3500 mm. Above the dining table, the ceiling rises to 6000 mm. A tall vertical window on the south side pulls daylight deep into the room and gives the volume a clear upward pull.

The indoor-outdoor connection is strongest where the living spaces meet the garden terrace. Large glass panes open the wall and let the outside paving read as part of the interior sequence. The kitchen, which was designed by the owners themselves, sits in this bright core. Blue cabinet fronts, a stone-toned worktop and a central island keep the room calm without flattening it. The light changes across those surfaces during the day, especially where the view moves from the work zone to the terrace beyond.

Open staircase and void as the interior hinge

The staircase is more than a connector. With its open tread, black balusters and treads made from old oak wine barrels, it becomes a visible hinge between floors. The wood has a pronounced grain and a darker tone that stands out against the light walls and the glazed openings around it. Because the staircase sits near the void, it is seen from several points in the house. The same route that brings movement upward also frames views across the living spaces.

That vertical movement matters in a house with this much height variation. The void above the dining area enlarges the room without making it vague, and the open stair keeps the centre of the plan readable. From the lower levels, the upper floor feels present through the railings, glazing and the changing ceiling line. The open staircase and void are not isolated features; they shape the way the whole modern new-build house with 1930s influence is experienced step by step.

Materials that carry the house from outside to inside

Brick, black zinc, steel and timber return throughout the project, but they do different work in each place. Outside, the brick gives weight to the street elevation, while the metal and timber surfaces make the recessed part lighter and more technical. Inside, the palette turns warmer: pale walls, wooden floors and the darkened oak steps bring texture without crowding the rooms. The kitchen cabinetry adds colour, and the glazing keeps the surfaces from feeling closed in.

The material choices are clearest where the living zone looks toward the garden. Large openings connect the interior to the paved terraces, grass and planting around the house. The windows read as frames rather than barriers. Even the dark detailing contributes to that effect, because it sharpens the outline of the openings and the roof edges. In this new-build house, the materials do not fight for attention; they set up a sequence of surfaces that can be read from the pavement to the back of the plot.

From a complicated start to a finished family house

The project began with delays and practical work that is easy to overlook once the house is complete. A garage had to be demolished, the contaminated soil had to be cleaned, and the site only became buildable after that. While those steps played out, the design and permit process continued. That slow beginning shaped the outcome in an indirect way: by the time construction started, the architecture had already been worked through in detail, from the brick street face to the steel-framed terrace and the tall interior volumes.

What remains visible now is a house built on contrast and repetition. The gable front appears in brick, then returns in steel; the staircase is open, but the oak steps give it weight; the kitchen is compact in plan, yet the ceiling lifts above it. All of it sits inside a modern new-build house with 1930s influence that keeps the older building language in view without letting it define the whole composition.
