Whitewashed walls catch the light, while the darker roof planes and glazed openings make the added parts read as part of one careful hunting lodge renovation. From the garden, the house still feels modest in outline, yet the plan has gained much more room inside.

Small additions, not one heavy block

Instead of one large extension, the design uses several smaller additions. That choice keeps the house close to its original size and gives the new plan a stepped rhythm. You move around corners and discover another piece of the building each time: a lower roofline here, a glazed opening there, then a change in surface or direction. The result is a renovation and extension that grows outward in fragments rather than as a single mass. It is a practical response to the plot rules as well, since the buildable areas were checked carefully before the plan was drawn.

That layered approach also changes how the house is read from the outside. The lodge no longer presents one blunt front. It breaks into smaller parts, with the additions tucked around the old volume. In photographs, the white surfaces, dark window frames and large glazing make the different sections legible at a glance. The architecture stays compact, but the living space behind it is clearly more generous than before.

Roof forms that keep the lodge recognisable

Several historic roof shapes were carried into the new work. The stolp roof, the knuckle roof and the small turret remain part of the silhouette, and the turret keeps its thatched roof where the rest of the house has moved to flatter roof tiles. That contrast gives the roofscape a clear hierarchy. The turret still reads as the most distinctive element, while the new roofs stretch out in cleaner lines. The hunting lodge renovation does not erase the old profile; it tightens it and makes it easier to read.

There are other details that do the same work at a smaller scale. The brickwork in chain bond returns in the new parts, linking the additions back to the original house without copying it mechanically. New black stained beams and zinc dormers add sharper edges to the roofline. Seen together, these elements keep the building tied to its past while shifting it toward a more contemporary rural home.

Whitewashed surfaces between old and new

The transition between the original walls and the added volumes is fully whitewashed. That finish smooths out the junctions and lets the different parts sit together visually. It also brightens the house, especially where the large glazing cuts through the pale surfaces. The effect is not decorative in a loud way. It is structural. The whitewash makes the old masonry and the newer construction speak the same language, while the darker roof details keep the house from becoming flat.

On the garden side, the terrace with water feature extends that clarity outdoors. The water reflects the house and the sky, and the straight edges of the paving sharpen the setting around it. The terrace sits close to the façade, so the glazed openings read as living spaces rather than distant openings. From that angle, the house feels as much about movement between inside and outside as about the renewed exterior shell.

A plan made for smaller rooms and daily use

Inside, the biggest change is not size but arrangement. The former layout had large, heavy rooms that did not suit the family’s wishes. The new plan breaks that up into smaller, more useful spaces: a kitchen for the morning, a front room for the afternoon, and a living room with a fire for the evening. Each room has a clear role, and each one is scaled to a different moment in the day. The hunting lodge renovation is therefore as much about sequence as it is about space.

The family also asked for three separate places for their children, each with a bedroom, bathroom and walk-in closet. That makes the house read as a series of private zones rather than one shared block. The plan allows for retreat without losing contact with the rest of the home. It is a quiet kind of change, but it shapes how the house is lived in far more than a larger shell would have done.

Glazing, terraces and the edge of the garden

Large glazing opens the house toward the garden and the paved terraces. In the images, the windows run across broad sections of the façade, sometimes under a canopy, sometimes beside a darker wall or roof fragment. The exterior route is equally direct: paths, paving and a reflective water surface organise the ground around the building. A low border, a change in paving tone and a stretch of grass are enough to frame the house without closing it off.

The garden does not try to dominate the project. It works as a foreground for the architecture. The water feature catches the shapes of the roof and the pale walls, while the darker elements of the house anchor the view. From another angle, the terrace and paths show how the renovation and extension reaches beyond the original lodge, but still keeps the setting measured. Nothing is oversized, yet the whole place feels expanded.

Presented, approved and finally completed

The finished plan was presented to the local design review board and the municipality, and both responded positively. That matters here because the project needed to reconcile old roof shapes, new additions and a changed floor plan within a single house. Once built, the lodge became something different from the building that was offered for sale. It keeps the silhouette of a hunting lodge, but the daily life inside is organized around smaller rooms, light-filled openings and a more usable connection to the garden.

What remains strongest is the way the old and new parts are allowed to sit side by side without shouting over one another. The whitewashed facade, the chain bond brickwork, the thatched roof turret and the larger glazing all play a role in that shift. It is a measured hunting lodge renovation, but not a cautious one. The house now has more volume, more light and a clearer plan, while its original outline still leads the eye through the building.

Project photography by Dick Ruumpol.

A hunting lodge renovation with small extensions, preserved roof forms, a whitewashed finish and larger glazed openings for family living.
"_yoast_wpseo_estimated-reading-time-minutes":"
3075,2983
post-1067262","hoog_project","type-hoog_project","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","hoog_category-exterior-design","hoog_category-kitchen-ideas
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v27.4 (Yoast SEO v27.4) -
