The Art Nouveau home renovation began by stripping the row house back to its shell, so the original details could be found, repaired, and brought back into view. What emerged is a family home where restored ornament sits next to dark custom carpentry, and where the garden is not a view at the end of the plan but part of the daily route through the rooms.

Original details brought back into view

The renovation starts with the parts that usually disappear behind later layers. Mouldings reappear along the ceilings, wall panelling draws a clear line through the rooms, and the old wooden doors keep their carved surface and framed proportions. In the entrance, glass panels with a classic pattern sit beside white joinery, so the first impression is not a clean break from the past but a careful return to what was already there. That is where the renovated row house interior finds its character: in the recovered edges, not in decoration added after the fact.

Black joinery takes over where the restored elements stop. It gives cabinets, storage, and built-in pieces a firm outline against white walls and pale ceilings. The dark finish does not try to imitate the older fabric of the house; it stays legible as a later layer. Seen in the photos, it frames the kitchen and living areas with flat fronts and sharp corners, turning the black custom cabinetry into a graphic counterpoint to the ornament around it. The contrast is direct, but the rooms never feel crowded by it.

A rear intervention kept intentionally restrained

At the back of the house, the intervention is modest in size but clear in effect. A small extension adds extra volume and surface area, while the rear wall was insulated and finished in black render. On the ground floor, a large opening folds back to connect the interior with the garden. In one move, the rear of the house becomes quieter and more controlled, with the black rear facade render acting as a dark backdrop for glass, daylight, and the changing view toward the outside.

The opening is not just visual. It changes how the house is used. The living room was placed toward the garden rather than left in the middle of the plan, and that choice gives the family room a direct relationship with the outdoor space. In summer, the large ground-floor opening allows the boundary to disappear almost completely, so the room extends onto the city garden without changing level. The effect is practical first: a wider route, more air, and a stronger link between the table, the sofa, and the terrace edge.

One floor that carries the transition

Inside the extension and rear addition, the floor is finished in an antracite polybeton floor that continues toward the garden. Its dark tone anchors the lighter walls and reflects a little of the daylight that comes through the rear glazing. Because the surface runs on into the outdoor zone, the transition feels measured rather than abrupt. The material does the work of connecting rooms without drawing attention to itself. It also gives the rear spaces a sturdier base, especially where the opening to the garden is widest.

That same material logic appears in the way the house is staged. White wall surfaces keep the rooms bright, while the dark joinery and floor draw the eye to edges, openings, and planes. In the photos, the living room reads as a series of carefully placed surfaces: a low seat, a long opening, a dark cabinet line, a pale wall, a framed view. Nothing is overworked. The project relies on the thickness of the wall, the line of the window, and the way the floor continues beyond the threshold.

Living spaces arranged around light and view

The living area is placed so that the garden becomes part of the room’s daily sightline. Large glazing with black profiles opens the rear wall, and the furniture sits in relation to that frame rather than against it. The room feels long and open, but the arrangement stays grounded by built-in elements and a low TV wall in dark material. A pair of hanging lights in the dining area adds a second line through the space, pulling attention from the table toward the opening beyond. This is where the indoor-outdoor living idea becomes visible in the plan.

Across the dining and kitchen zone, the black custom cabinetry sets a steady backdrop for the brighter surfaces around it. It is matte enough to absorb some of the light, which keeps the room from becoming visually flat. In the kitchen, the dark fronts and work zone contrast with pale walls and a lighter ceiling, while the adjacent seating area keeps the eye moving toward the garden. The result is not a showpiece kitchen but a full renovation that allows each part of the ground floor to read in relation to the next.

Classic frames, contemporary lines

Some of the strongest moments come from the meeting of old profiles and new surfaces. A paneled door, a glazed transom, and a narrow frame pattern sit just a few steps away from the clean edges of the custom joinery. In the hall, the patterned floor and white door leaves bring back a more traditional domestic scale, while a nearby study corner uses the same daylight to set a quieter mood. These shifts are small, but they make the renovated row house interior feel layered rather than assembled from one style alone.

The rooms keep changing register as you move through them. A desk sits beside a broad window with white slatted screening; a corridor opens through a framed view to a darker cabinet wall; the living area turns toward the garden and the wide rear opening. Each moment is shaped by light, not by ornament alone. That is what keeps the Art Nouveau home renovation from becoming nostalgic. The house preserves its original details, but it also lets new surfaces and larger openings rewrite how those details are used day to day.

A house that ends in the garden

Toward the back, the project becomes most explicit. The rear wall, the extension, and the floor all work together to guide movement outward. Black render keeps the exterior face visually restrained, while the ground-floor opening makes the garden feel close enough to touch from the living room. Even when the glass is closed, the line from inside to outside stays readable through the floor finish and the depth of the opening. This is a house where restoration and change share the same frame, and where the garden is set into the plan rather than appended to it.

Projects with black custom joinery often depend on contrast alone, but here the darker elements do more than sharpen the image. They hold the repaired mouldings, the old wooden doors, and the white wall surfaces in a clear visual order. The result is a renovated row house interior that feels grounded in its original fabric while making room for a new way of living at the rear. The restored details remain visible, the garden stays close, and the house reads as one continuous sequence from front hall to opening in the back.

An Art Nouveau row house renovation with restored mouldings, black custom joinery, a wide opening to the garden, and dark floor continuity.
"_yoast_wpseo_estimated-reading-time-minutes":"
2967,2983,2984
post-1079910","hoog_project","type-hoog_project","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","hoog_category-bathroom-ideas","hoog_category-kitchen-ideas","hoog_category-living-room-ideas
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v27.4 (Yoast SEO v27.4) -
