Layered planting pulls this modern city garden<\/a> into a green pocket, while the view from the kitchen stays open all the way to the back of the plot. Two planting islands sit near the centre and break the space into smaller places to linger without closing it off. The result feels compact and measured, with paths, borders and seating zones kept clear enough to read at a glance.<\/p>\n

Planting islands that shape the small city garden<\/h2>\n

The two central planting clouds do most of the spatial work. They divide the small city garden<\/a> into three distinct areas, yet the line of sight from the living kitchen remains intact. That gives the garden depth. From inside, the planting reads as a series of green masses rather than a single mass of foliage, and that shift keeps the space lively even though the footprint is limited. White allium flowers add a lighter note above the lower planting, especially where the beds catch the evening light.<\/p>\n

Geometry holds everything together. The paving sets out straight routes between the borders, and the planting beds are drawn as clear shapes rather than soft edges. Large tiles and narrow joints make the ground plane feel calm, while the taller greenery rises in front of the fence line. It is this contrast between flat paving and upright planting that gives the garden its urban jungle planting character without making it feel crowded.<\/p>\n

Pergola privacy with timber frames and open sightlines<\/h2>\n

Robust pergolas sit with their feet on either side of the borders and add a second layer to the garden. They give pergola privacy<\/a> where the space needs it most, while still allowing the structure to stay visually open from the house. The timber members run in straight lines overhead, echoing the paving below. Seen together, those horizontal lines guide the eye deeper into the garden and sharpen the connection between terrace and planting.<\/p>\n

The timberwork is custom made, and that matters in a space this small. Posts, beams and aluminium planters are fitted to the layout rather than dropped into it. The custom timber details keep edges tight around the beds, so the garden reads as designed in place instead of assembled from standard parts. Against the greenery, the wood has enough presence to frame the seats without cutting off the views.<\/p>\n

Where privacy is needed, the fence takes over<\/h3>\n

The wood privacy fence works as the quiet background to the planting. Its vertical boards create a steady surface behind the pergola and the border planting, which allows the leaf shapes, flower heads and light points to stand out more clearly. In the evening, the fence darkens into a backdrop and the garden mood lighting becomes more visible along the edges of the beds. The lighting is subtle, but it gives the path and planting line a readable outline after dark.<\/p>\n

That mix of enclosure and openness is what gives the garden its particular rhythm. One side shields the sitting area from view, while the other keeps the sightline toward the house unbroken. The pergola, fence and planting do not compete for attention; each one takes a specific job. The fence closes off one edge, the pergola draws a line overhead, and the planting softens the middle ground between them.<\/p>\n

A view from the kitchen that stays part of the design<\/h2>\n

The view from kitchen to garden is not treated as an afterthought. Large glazed doors connect the interior directly to the terrace, so the first thing you see is the sequence of paving, planters and planting mounds outside. Even from inside, the garden reads as layered rather than flat. The glazing reflects some of the greenery back into the room, but it also keeps the outside legible, which makes the small city garden feel connected to daily movement in the house.<\/p>\n

This inside-outside line is reinforced by the materials. Glass, timber, aluminium and masonry each hold their own role, but none of them dominate the scene. The aluminium planters draw clean edges around the beds, while the timber structure softens the stronger lines of the paving. Together they make the route between kitchen and garden easy to read, with no wasted corner or dead strip along the perimeter.<\/p>\n

Evening light across paving, borders and seating<\/h2>\n

Garden mood lighting is tucked into the borders and along the routes, so the light comes from within the planting rather than from obvious fixtures. At dusk, the points of light pick out the shape of the beds and catch the lower leaves. The paving stays visible too, which prevents the garden from collapsing into a dark mass. In a compact plot, that matters: the light extends the use of the garden and keeps the route through it clear.<\/p>\n

Several image views show how the lighting relates to the rest of the composition. One frame places the lights just in front of the wood privacy fence, where they trace the edge of the planting. Another shows the glow along the central path, where the lines of paving and border planting meet. The effect is restrained, but it gives the space a defined edge and makes the geometry easier to read once daylight fades.<\/p>\n

Custom joinery in timber and aluminium<\/h3>\n

The custom timber details and aluminium elements are not decorative extras here. They are the parts that let the garden fit its awkward dimensions without looking forced. The planters follow the drawn lines of the project, and the pergola posts sit exactly where the borders need support. Because the joinery is tailored to the technical drawings, the finishes meet neatly at the corners, around the seating area and alongside the paving. That precision keeps the small garden legible from every angle.<\/p>\n

What stands out most is how little the design relies on spectacle. There is no single central object competing for attention. Instead, the planting islands, the pergola, the fence and the lighting are arranged to carry the space together.
