Not a hard line, but a garden that keeps moving toward it through pale paving, wooden planks and low planting. In this waterfront garden with water view, the terrace is laid out as a sequence of levels rather than one flat surface. That shift in height pulls the eye outward and makes the whole plot read larger than it is. The result is a luxury terrace garden that uses the view as part of the composition.

A front approach without fences at the curb

The front garden makes a direct statement by leaving out fences and hedges. The house stays fully visible from the driveway, which gives the approach an open, welcoming character. Privacy is not handled at the boundary but closer to the building itself. Wooden screens with gates sit left and right, and the same wood returns in the garage door area. When the gates are closed, the private zone begins at the house. When they are open, the front plane remains clear and calm.

That move changes the way the plot works. Instead of shutting the garden off with a green wall, the design allows light, air and sightlines to reach the entrance. The materials carry the job of screening: timber panels, a gated opening and a surface that keeps the driveway visually restrained. It is a practical solution, but it also sets the tone for the rest of the garden, where boundaries are handled with more precision than force.

Terraces that step toward the water

At the rear, the garden opens into long views across the water. The terrace does not stop at the house; it continues through a layered route down toward the shoreline. Large grey paving fields form the main standing areas, while wooden deck terrace elements take over where the level drops. The steps are not treated as separate objects. They are part of the movement, guiding the body and the eye in the same direction.

Low stones and gravel bands stretch from the waterline back into the garden, so the border feels less like a finish and more like a transition. The planting is kept close to the edges, with ornamental grass border sections softening the hard surfaces. This gives the terrace a clear outline without turning it into a closed box. From several angles, the garden seems to continue beyond its own line, especially where a tree on the neighbouring plot is allowed to become part of the view.

Floating slabs, gravel and grass

One of the strongest details is the stepping route made from floating concrete slabs. Between them sit stones and steppe-like plants, small elements that break up the geometry without muddling it. The slabs hover just above the ground plane, which keeps the path light even when the surrounding materials are heavy and pale. It is a simple sequence, but it gives the garden a measured rhythm. Every step changes the view a little, especially where the route runs parallel to the water.

Along the edge, the planting stays restrained and dry in character. Grasses and small structural plants stand in gravel pockets, catching light without blocking the outlook. That restrained planting is what makes the modern garden with planting feel open rather than crowded. It also supports the lines of the terrace, because the green stays low and the surface remains legible. The eye keeps moving over the materials instead of stopping at them.

3D garden design as a working tool

The project is also a clear example of 3D garden design being used as more than a presentation layer. The design process allows a future garden to be experienced virtually, with day and night conditions shown in advance and the direction of the sun mapped into the plan. A 360-degree view helps explain how the levels, screens and terraces will relate to one another before the work is built. For the execution team, that kind of visual clarity is useful because dimensions are easier to read than on a flat drawing.

What matters here is not the technology itself, but the confidence it creates in the final layout. The garden is composed around sightlines, height changes and material transitions that have to work together. A virtual walk-through makes those moves visible before the first slab is placed. That is especially relevant in a garden with water view, where the exact position of a step, a screen or a terrace edge changes how far the eye can travel.

Shaped by architecture, then released into planting

The design language starts with straight lines and then loosens again once it reaches the planting. The built part of the garden is controlled: terraces, steps, screens and level changes all follow a clear order. After that, the planting takes over the softer work. Trees with multiple trunks, low grasses and looser border groups interrupt the sharpness just enough to keep the garden from reading as rigid. This is where the modern garden with planting shows its strength.

Rather than forcing every edge to remain exact, the plan allows the garden to connect to its surroundings. The tree on the neighbouring plot is not hidden; it becomes part of the scene. The woodland beyond the water is treated in the same way. It is visible, and therefore included. That approach gives the site a wider frame without adding anything theatrical. The view does the work.

Evening light under the canopy

As the light drops, the garden changes character. The canopy and surrounding terrace areas are lit with a controlled line of lamps, enough to define the edges and leave the rest in shadow. The lighting does not flood the garden. It picks out the steps, the overhanging structure and the nearest plants, so the materials remain readable after dark. In the images, this gives the terrace a slower pace and a sharper outline against the water.

The canopy itself extends the use of the terrace and gives the seating area a clear ceiling plane. With warm light above and pale paving below, the outdoor room feels anchored without being closed in. The wooden deck terrace and the adjacent stone surfaces sit beside each other, each taking a different role in the composition. One absorbs movement. The other holds it still. Together they make the garden usable at different times of day, while keeping the water view at the center.

Materials that keep the scene open

The material palette is narrow and deliberate: wood, concrete or ceramic paving, natural stone and gravel. That restraint helps the view stay dominant. The timber returns in the decks and gates, while the harder surfaces stay quiet in colour and finish. Natural stone appears at the retaining edges and in the transition toward the water, where it anchors the softer planting around it. Nothing is overworked. The garden relies on proportion, alignment and the way each surface meets the next.

Seen as a whole, the project shows how a luxury terrace garden can be shaped without overfilling it. The house has privacy where it needs it, openness where it can carry it, and a terrace system that leads naturally toward the water. The lines are clear, the planting stays close to the ground, and the view remains unbroken. That is what makes the garden feel resolved: not decoration, but control over what stays visible.

Text: Jan Mol
Photography: Peter Baas

A modern luxury garden project with terraces, wooden decking, ornamental grasses and a photorealistic 3D design approach.
"_yoast_wpseo_estimated-reading-time-minutes":"
2974
post-388655","hoog_project","type-hoog_project","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","hoog_category-garden-design
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v27.4 (Yoast SEO v27.4) -
