Around it, ceramic tiles with a wood-look finish soften the dark plane and pull the fire into the architecture instead of letting it sit on top of it. In the same house, a second open gas fireplace was created for the bedroom and bathroom, where the wall niche gives the flames a more compact frame and the tiled surround keeps the surface calm.

A fireplace wall niche that does more than hold the fire

The fireplace wall niche is shaped with restraint. Straight edges, fine joints and a shallow recess keep the eye on the opening itself, while the ceramic cladding adds a measured texture. In the bedroom and bathroom setting, the material choice does the visual work: the wood-look tile brings a warmer tone to the wall without adding visible noise. The result is not a decorative insert, but a clear architectural cut in the room, one that lets the flame sit in a controlled frame.

Wood-look tile cladding around the open fire

Up close, the wood-look tile cladding shows how the surface carries the project. It echoes timber in colour and grain, yet the finish stays crisp and flat. That matters in a fireplace wall, where the material has to hold its line around heat and light. The tiles wrap the opening with a continuous rhythm, so the fire reads against a surface that is calm rather than busy. In the image, the indirect glow around the niche adds another layer, catching the edges of the wall and tracing the geometry after dark.

The wider composition stays minimal. A dark surround, long horizontal lines and a clean junction with the adjacent wall keep the fire visually embedded in the room. Near the opening, the light shifts from matte to reflective, and that small change is enough to give the wall depth. The fireplace does not rely on ornament. Its presence comes from proportion, from the way the niche is cut, and from the contrast between the flame and the muted finish around it.

The tunnel fireplace as a room divider

Further into the house, the tunnel fireplace takes on a different role. At 2.50 metres, it spans the space between the living room and the kitchen and turns the fire into a piece of architecture that can be read from both sides. Instead of closing the route between the two rooms, it marks the transition. You see through the opening, across the flame, and then into the next zone. That double view is what gives the tunnel fireplace its force: it works as a divider without becoming a solid barrier.

The material finish changes here. Leather fireplace panels cover the tunnel element and set a softer, deeper surface against the hard lines of the room. The panels catch light differently from the tiled surround in the other fire, and that difference is visible immediately. Where the wood-look tile cladding keeps the bedroom and bathroom fireplace compact and crisp, the leather on the tunnel fireplace adds a darker, more tactile layer to a longer architectural line.

Leather fireplace panels along the open gas fireplace as room divider

The open gas fireplace as room divider is the most explicit spatial gesture in the project. It sits between living and kitchen as a hinge, with the flame visible from both sides and the finishes extending along the length of the construction. The leather fireplace panels give that length a quieter surface than polished stone would have done. They reduce glare, absorb some of the surrounding light and let the fire itself stay central. In the photo, the opening is set into a strict rectangular frame, which keeps the room division legible at a glance.

Indirect lighting reinforces the structure. Around the wall and beneath the opening, a subtle glow outlines the edges and separates the fireplace from the darker planes around it. This lighting does not compete with the fire; it simply makes the transition in the wall more visible once the room dims. The effect is restrained, but it changes how the fireplace reads in the interior. The line becomes longer, the niche deeper, the opening more pronounced.

One project, two ways of framing flame

What makes the project interesting is the difference between the two applications. In the bedroom and bathroom, the open gas fireplace is framed as a compact wall feature with ceramic wood-look tile. In the main living area, the tunnel fireplace stretches across a partition and becomes part of the circulation between rooms. Both rely on the same principle: a clean wall cut, a controlled opening and a finish that supports the fire rather than distracting from it. One is enclosed in a niche; the other acts as a passage through the house.

Seen together, the two fireplaces show how material changes the reading of a room. Tile brings a measured, structured surface. Leather shifts the tone and gives the longer element more depth. The minimal setting around both units keeps the details readable: joints, edges, opening depth and the play of flame against a dark background. Nothing feels overdrawn. The architecture is doing the framing, and the finishes are there to sharpen that frame.

That is also why the project works as a reference for an open gas fireplace in a contemporary interior. The wall treatment is not a separate decorative layer; it is part of the spatial logic. The fireplace niche, the through-view of the tunnel fireplace and the material contrast between ceramic and leather all point in the same direction. They make the fire a structural element, not just an inserted object, and they leave the room with a clear line from one zone to the next.

The images underline that reading. The broad opening, the long panel joints and the visible transition to the adjacent space give the project a measured pace. Even the glow around the wall feels integrated, tracing the edges rather than announcing itself. For anyone looking at an open gas fireplace, a tunnel fireplace, or a fireplace wall niche with careful material finishing, this project shows how those parts can be combined without losing clarity.

Open gas fireplace with wood-look tile cladding and a tunnel fireplace finished with leather panels, set into a clean interior wall.
"_yoast_wpseo_estimated-reading-time-minutes":"
2967,2968
post-395885","hoog_project","type-hoog_project","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","hoog_category-bathroom-ideas","hoog_category-bedroom-ideas

Open gas fireplace with tunnel fireplace

<meta property="og:title" content="Project: open gas fireplace and tunnel fireplace with wood-look tile &
