Light moves across the room before you notice the joinery. Tall windows pull in the green outside, while the new layout turns the former sitting room into a modern kitchen with custom cabinetry<\/a>. The change is immediate: a central kitchen island anchors the space, and the wall of hand-made cabinets runs all the way to the ceiling, giving the room a strong vertical line. What was once a formal house now reads as a family home organised around daily movement, cooking and long views into the garden.<\/p>\n

Rooms reworked around everyday use<\/h2>\n

The original plan was taken apart room by room. The old dining room became a library lounge, and the fireplace from the former sitting room now sits there as a fixed point in the new arrangement. Its stone-and-brick surround gives the room a heavier centre, while framed art above it keeps the wall from feeling static. In a house with historic bones, the shift is clear: spaces are no longer defined by their old labels, but by how the family uses them now. The result is a classic modern interior that relies on plan changes rather than decoration alone.<\/p>\n

Storage is handled with the same directness. A mudroom was added for sports kit, coats and bags, so the entrance sequence no longer spills into the living spaces. That practical room sits behind the scenes, but it shapes the way the whole house works. The kitchen is built around two strong elements: the cabinet wall and the island. The cabinetry is hand-made and tall enough to read as part of the architecture, not as loose furniture. Between the wood fronts and the pale worktop, the room picks up a calm rhythm. The island, placed in the middle, gives the space a working core and a casual gathering point. Large windows sit beyond it, so even the most utilitarian corner of the room stays visually open. The change is visible in the opening itself: instead of a narrow, inward-facing room, there is now a route for light and air. This kind of intervention is small in footprint but decisive in effect, especially in a house where older rooms might otherwise stay dim.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere in the house, the same attention to surface continues. The conservatory, the bedrooms and the walk-in dressing room were all updated, tying the more private parts of the plan into the same language as the kitchen and lounge. In the bathroom, a freestanding bath appears behind paneled doors in one image, while another shows a white basin set into a wood-fronted unit beside textured wall panels. These details are not pushed to the foreground, but they show how the project extends beyond the main living spaces and into the quieter rooms.<\/p>\n

Wallpaper, texture and a few sharp colour notes<\/h2>\n

Texture carries much of the atmosphere here. Several rooms use wallpaper with a noticeably tactile surface, and the small toilet even takes on a mosaic-like pattern that recalls houses near the coast. It is a modest room, yet the paper gives it more depth than a plain painted wall would. In the bedroom and lounge areas, patterned fabrics and deep purple tones appear in smaller doses, often near curtains or lamp shades. The colours never overwhelm the rooms; they sit against neutral walls and timber joinery, where they read as clear interruptions rather than decoration for its own sake.<\/p>\n

Classic details, handled lightly<\/h3>\n

The staircase landing brings another layer to the project. A chandelier hangs beneath arched wall details, so the passage between floors becomes a visible pause instead of a purely functional route. Elsewhere, classic window proportions and panelled frames sit next to the new joinery, keeping the house\u2019s older structure legible even after the reconfiguration. The project works because it does not erase those elements. It uses them as a backdrop for a sharper, more practical plan, with the kitchen, library lounge and family rooms taking over the lead.<\/p>\n

What remains after the changes is a house that now feels organised around the people using it. The modern kitchen with custom cabinetry carries the centre of the plan, the library lounge preserves one of the historic rooms, and the mudroom absorbs the clutter that usually lands in the wrong place. Light, storage and circulation have all been adjusted, but the visible story is still one of texture, colour and old details set into a new order.
