It runs along the walls, frames the openings, and gives the rooms a steady rhythm before the new joinery steps in. In this heritage interior renovation, original timber was repaired with traditional techniques and materials, then paired with fitted kitchen cabinets and custom pieces that sit close to the architecture rather than competing with it. Technical updates were handled at the same time, so the house could keep its character while being adapted for later use.

Restored timber and the language of the house

Rather than stripping the rooms back, the work started with what was already there: the original carpentry, the ceiling lines, and the material transitions between basement, kitchen, and the floor above. Those parts were repaired first, then used as the guide for the new interventions. The result is not a room filled with display gestures, but one where the preserved woodwork still sets the tone. New insertions follow that lead, matching the proportions and surface logic already present in the house.

That approach is visible in the way the new furniture sits against the old structure. Cabinet fronts stop and start where the architecture asks them to, and curved edges soften the harder lines of the new joinery. The project keeps a clear link between repair and addition. Technical work was carried out with future use in mind, but it never pushed the historic shell into the background. Instead, the house keeps its own pace, with each room reading as part of the same interior story.

Fitted kitchen cabinets shaped by the ceiling

The kitchen is the clearest expression of the new work. White fitted kitchen cabinets were painted in the same lacquer as the timber throughout the house, so the storage reads as part of the room rather than a separate object. Their straight fronts are interrupted by small references to the original ceiling decoration, which keeps the joinery from feeling generic. Across from that, the oak cabinets bend gently to follow the curve above, a small move that changes the whole line of the room.

A stone-look countertop anchors the kitchen and gives the light cabinetry a firmer base. On the island, the same stone-look surface carries the working zone, so the kitchen island stone look is not only a visual device but a practical one as well. The yellow table cuts through the pale palette with a sharper note of color, and its curved outline echoes the cabinets around it. Open shelves and fitted storage keep the wall plane useful without making it heavy.

Light, storage, and small architectural echoes

Integrated niche lighting is woven into the kitchen wall, which helps the open shelving and glazed sections read at night without extra fixtures competing for attention. The long horizontal run of the cabinets is balanced by the vertical pull of the windows nearby, where daylight lands on the pale fronts and the stone surface. Even the most practical parts of the room carry traces of the older interior: a profile here, a rounded corner there, a line repeated from the ceiling into the joinery.

Seen together, the fitted kitchen cabinets, the stone-look countertop, and the custom wooden shelves create a kitchen that works quietly. Nothing here tries to dominate the room. The material changes are measured, and that restraint lets the original architecture remain visible behind the new use. The kitchen feels settled because its new parts were drawn from the house itself: from the ceiling curve, the lacquered timber, and the proportions already fixed by the structure.

A bathroom built around existing lines

The bathroom follows the existing layout and then adds only what is needed to complete it. A freestanding oval bathtub sits against a pale, textured wall finish, giving the room a single clear focal point. A vanity cabinet was introduced alongside the bath, and both old and new elements are covered with a decorative finish that also serves the wet areas of the room. The surface reads as one continuous layer, which keeps the bathroom visually calm without hiding the construction beneath it.

Small details do much of the work here. The bath curve repeats the softer geometry found elsewhere in the project, while the fixed lines of the vanity hold the room in place. A window with blinds brings in daylight that slips over the pale finish and the edge of the tub. The room does not rely on ornament. Instead, it uses surface, shape, and light to make the most of what was already there and the few additions that were required.

The dressing room after restoration and repainting

The dressing room was fully restored and repainted before the new furniture was installed. That preparation matters, because the new pieces are set against a fresh surface rather than a tired shell. In the middle of the room, a foldable island was introduced, made from the same material as the old wooden fireplace. It gives the room a central object without making the plan rigid, and it links the new storage lines to a material already rooted in the house.

The surrounding cabinetry is more rectilinear, which makes the island’s folded form stand out. That contrast is deliberate. The island creates a pause between the walls of storage and the older architectural fragments still visible in the room. The result is practical, but it also keeps a line of continuity with the historic interior. A restored room like this depends on such shifts: a change in surface, a repeated material, a piece of furniture that reads as part of the house rather than an import.

New furniture that stays close to the architecture

Across the project, the new furniture was designed with close attention to the existing architecture and materials. That means the joinery does not arrive as a separate style statement. It takes cues from the ceiling, the woodwork, and the way the rooms are proportioned. In the kitchen, the cabinetry bends where the room bends. In the dressing room, the central island borrows from the old fireplace material. Each move is specific, and each one keeps the historic interior legible.

This is what gives the renovation its steadiness: repaired timber, fitted kitchen cabinets, a stone-look countertop, and bespoke elements that answer the rooms they inhabit. The historic shell remains visible in the wall lines, the ceiling detail, and the preserved carpentry. New pieces are introduced with enough precision to serve daily use, but never so loudly that they override the existing fabric. The house reads as a sequence of rooms that have been adjusted, not replaced.

Photographer: Michiel Vergauwe
Bathroom mortar finish: Indicopainting

Restored woodwork, fitted kitchen cabinets, and bespoke bathroom details shape a heritage interior where old surfaces meet new insertions.
"_yoast_wpseo_estimated-reading-time-minutes":"
34
post-890579","hoog_project","type-hoog_project","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","hoog_category-badkamer-inspiratie
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v27.4 (Yoast SEO v27.4) -
