The double-height stairwell pulls the eye upward, while the wall of wine storage, the dark railing, and the pale floor keep the ground level firmly in view. Nothing here is overworked; the interest comes from the way each surface meets the next, from the black-painted stair to the carved edges of the walls and the light that slips through the void.

Arrival through a double-height stairwell

The entrance hall is the project’s first major move. It connects the different living spaces and gives the whole house a clear centre. A preserved staircase, painted black, turns through the double-height stairwell and reads almost like a line drawn through the space. Around it, wooden flooring, an original fireplace wall, decorative wall finishes, natural stone by the seating area, and carefully placed art and lighting build a room that feels layered rather than staged. The stair rail and the vertical opening above it give the hall its strongest rhythm.

Seen from below, the stairwell does more than link floors. It frames the upper levels, catches light from the void, and sets up a contrast between the historic shell and the new interventions. The black staircase railing stands out against the lighter walls and ceiling detailing, while the repeated verticals in the balustrade echo the tall proportions of the room. Even the seating niche near the hall feels part of the architecture, with stone underfoot and a measured amount of furnishing.

Bespoke wine storage at the threshold

Before the kitchen appears, the route passes through a more compressed corridor that works as a deliberate pause. Both walls carry a wine rack wall, built in as a pair of display cabinets rather than treated as a separate feature. The ceiling mirror stretches the passage visually and reflects the movement of the space, so the transition from the historic house to the new extension feels less abrupt. This is where the old and new interior is made legible: one side holds memory, the other opens toward the kitchen.

The wine storage is not tucked away. It stands at the threshold and becomes part of the everyday circulation. Glass doors, dark framing, and the repeated bottle bays give the corridor a dense, ordered surface, while the mirrored ceiling lifts the low passage above the eye line. Because the cabinets run on both sides, the walk through the hall feels enclosed for a moment, then releases into the larger kitchen volume.

A corridor that changes the scale

What makes this link space interesting is its change of scale. The house shifts from the height of the stair hall to a narrower strip, then opens again into the kitchen. That sequence is easy to read in the materials: mirror overhead, dark cabinetry at shoulder height, stone underfoot, and the brighter surface of the extension beyond. It is a small intervention, but it controls how the villa interior is experienced.

The kitchen island sets the pace

The luxury kitchen island runs six metres long and anchors the new extension. Its stone top introduces weight and texture, while the lighter natural stone floor keeps the room from feeling heavy. Behind it, a mostly black backsplash gives the kitchen a firm horizontal edge, and two niches with golden tiles catch the light in smaller flashes. The island is large enough to read as a working surface, a social table, and a visual hinge between the corridor and the rest of the room.

Here the old and new interior becomes especially clear in the way the finishes are layered. The pale floor reflects light back into the room, the dark rear wall absorbs it, and the stone surface of the island sits between the two. The effect is not decorative for its own sake; it is spatial. The kitchen gains depth because each material behaves differently, from the polished reflection of the tiles to the matte mass of the stone.

The composition is strict but not bare. The long island gives the kitchen a strong centre line, and the recessed golden niches break the dark backdrop just enough to register as detail. From several angles, the island also links back to the adjacent hall, so the room reads as part of a larger villa interior rather than a stand-alone kitchen zone.

Living room framed by stone and fire

Across the hall, the dining room and living room are separated by existing en-suite doors, which keep their original role as room dividers. In the living area, an authentic fireplace wall gives the room weight and creates a clear focus point. The dark framing around the fire area and the stone finish bring the wall into the foreground, especially against the lighter ceiling and the daylight from the large windows.

Around the fireplace, the room stays calm. The parket floor runs through the space, the window openings bring in broad daylight, and the curtains soften the edges of the glass without hiding the architecture. A window seat appears in one of the views, set into the wall under the frame. It is a small pause in the room, but it gives the living area a more exact edge and connects the fireplace wall to the window wall through material and proportion.

Daylight, curtains and a quieter corner

The living room does not rely on large gestures alone. A close view of the windows shows white framing, curtain folds, and a ledge-like seat beneath the glass. These quieter parts matter because they slow the room down after the more defined surfaces of the stair hall and kitchen. The villa interior keeps shifting between open volume and enclosed detail, and the living room is where that balance becomes most legible.

Upper-floor rooms arranged around the view

Upstairs, the private level is organised as a sequence of surfaces and sight lines. From the bed, the view runs toward a freestanding bath, so the room is read in one long line rather than as separate corners. On both sides of the catwalk, custom built-in niches with mirrors add depth and catch the light. Behind that wall, dressing rooms sit on either side before the route leads on to the bathroom, which remains part of the larger suite rather than the main subject of the floor.

The upper level repeats the same discipline seen below: framed openings, measured reflections, and joinery that follows the architecture. The niches do not sit on the wall as decoration; they carve into it. The mirrors extend the room without adding bulk, and the catwalk gives the suite a narrow, linear spine. The result is a private zone that keeps the same old and new interior language as the ground floor, only with softer edges and more enclosed movement.

That continuity is what gives the villa interior its character. The preserved stair, the wine rack wall, the six-metre kitchen island, the natural stone fireplace wall, and the built-in niches all belong to the same language of framed openings and precise material changes. Each room changes scale, but the house keeps returning to the same idea: historic elements left visible, new work drawn around them, and every transition made readable in light, stone, wood, and black metal.
