If you Google your name, you\u2019ll find\nsome amazing descriptions. Which description do you apply to yourself?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHmm, you know which description I\u2019d use\nfor myself? I\u2019m someone who does what they want to do. Twenty years ago, I was\na designer with ambitions and now I am head of three of my own design labels &#8211;\nStudio Job, BLOW and Jobshop, and I am involved in graphic design,\nart-direction, architecture, art, fashion, music, furniture design, and plenty\nof other things.&nbsp; And I think I can call\nmyself an influencer too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Describe your life as a teenager.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was an only child and we moved house\naround twelve times. It made me focus on myself and define my own world. In\nthat time, I developed characteristics that I wouldn\u2019t have had if I\u2019d had\nbrothers, sisters and lots of friends. As well as being a business man, my\nfather was also an artist so I was exposed to art in his studio. But when I\nstarted at the Design Academy Eindhoven (DAE), I wasn&#8217;t really focused on art\nand design.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tell us about an important moment in\nyour training.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAfter four or five years as a student,\npeople started to talk about my work and those around me began to realise that\nsomething important was happening. Lidewij Edelkoort, who was then a tutor at\nDAE realised that I would benefit from expanding my horizons and took me to\nParis for a while. In the end, I set all of my experiences aside and created my\nown world, just like when I was a child. I realised that I could never work for\na boss when I had to carry out mandatory military service and so I had no other\noption but to start up for myself. Other than that, I was permitted to join the\nacademy on the basis of a children&#8217;s drawing that I did in my father\u2019s studio.\nStrange but true.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>And then you have to stand on your own\ntwo feet. <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was a period of discovering and\nlearning. I was only semi-trained as a designer because you didn&#8217;t learn much\nduring the training and I had no idea how to set up my own business. In that\nperiod, you just have to focus on yourself, your talent and your determination.\nAnd, of course, you need a little luck. At the time, the Netherlands wasn&#8217;t\nready for the images I was making. People thought they were expensive and also\ntoo ugly. So I knew I had to go abroad. To Italy. To America. And knowing what\nI know now, it was a good decision, ha ha.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A quote that is regularly attributed to\nyou in interviews is: \u201cWe make something that nobody has asked for.\u201d <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt Studio Job, we make things that we find\ninteresting to showcase them, and we don\u2019t think about what others want to see.\nIt\u2019s upside-down marketing but it seems to work. If it didn&#8217;t, Studio Job would\nnot have survived for so long in its current form.&nbsp; If a creation evokes an emotion in me, that&#8217;s\ngood enough. The only filter is me. Narcissistic? Arrogant? With the rare\ntalent that I have, it would seem that I am quite effective at sensing when\nsomething is good.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>As a man of almost fifty, you travel the\nworld, you\u2019re a celebrated individual and regarded as an icon and an\ninfluential artist. Do you still have dreams?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been able to cross out a few items on\nmy unwritten bucket list. But it&#8217;s funny, when you eventually realise\nsomething, you don\u2019t experience the euphoria you\u2019d expected. It just feels like\nsomething that you\u2019ve worked really hard for. That is the sadness of seeking\nfulfilment in your work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Do you have a dream job?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe thirty people who work at Studio Job\nhave my dream job. They spend all day in a studio, making fantastic creations.\nAmazing! I have to keep everything up and running. And that\u2019s not quite as much\nfun.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Do you enjoy the things you&#8217;ve achieved?\n<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI sometimes find that difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>That&#8217;s a shame.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYes, but it is what it is.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Do you feel a sense of pride?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m proud that I am creatively\nindependent. That I\u2019m international. That I speak languages. That I can\nempathise with other cultures and people. That I\u2019m open-minded. I have diversity\nin my work.
