City garden in Bergen op Zoom

For an urban garden in Bergen op Zoom with a huge height difference, Noël van Mierlo has designed a quirky garden with original elements. In 2016, Groenregie was allowed to realize this natural garden with a modern look.

A historic city wall of almost one and a half meters high divides this small garden in two. Noël has connected the two separate garden parts to each other by designing a very special staircase. The terrace at the house is relatively large and serves as a dining terrace. Near the city wall, a small sturdy table has been designed to catch the last rays of the sun. Groenregie has made this table from a large Schellevist tile, which rests on a custom-made base made of black coated steel. This table also forms the base of the stairs to the higher garden area. The other steps are made of black coated steel uprights and black industrial grids. The advantage of these stairs is that there is sufficient light under the stairs, so that beautiful plants can grow here.

The fence is also very unique and consists of black-coated H-steel profiles (uprights), horizontally stacked chestnut slats and a black-coated steel profile as a finish on top of the wall. Sturdy plastered narrow walls interrupt the horizontal lines of the chestnut slats.

Groenregie has also made two decking in this city garden in Bergen op Zoom: a decking in the lower garden and a shaded decking in the upper garden. The decking parts of these decks are specially tailored and planed 2.8 x 15 cm hardwood planks. Because both decks are higher than the surrounding garden, they give an extra dimension to the garden. The paving consists of light gray Schellevis tiles of 50 x 50 cm and fine Morainesplit on gravel stabilizing plates. The light gray color of the tiles fits very nicely with the existing city wall on the right side of the garden.

The plants in the lower and upper garden exude the same atmosphere, so that both parts of the garden form even more unity. A beautiful light pink rose “New Dawn” grows along the pergola of heavy oak posts and beams. The multi-stemmed Amelanchier (currant tree) in the upper garden enhances the atmosphere of an urban garden, together with the boxwood bulbs and the shade-loving ground covers, such as ferns, ornamental grasses, Hostas and autumn anemones.

Also in this garden, the fully automatic garden lighting creates a nice atmosphere at dusk.
