Drive-in home
Renovation Amstelveen
The transformation of this drive-in house from the sixties beautifully shows how current this architectural style is still today. Carlo and his family played with indoor and outdoor spaces. As a result, there is more space and openness in the interior. At the same time, the playful, sleek facade image has been given a new dimension.
The municipality of Amstelveen nominated the drive-in home for its annual architecture prize. The jury report describes the renovation as follows:
“This project is an excellent example of a successful transformation assignment. The drive-in house has been given a completely new look, while retaining the special characteristic architecture of the existing structure. The outer shell is placed further outwards. As a result, the plasticity of the facade has become the generator of a sophisticated spatial play in the interior and between interior and exterior. The kitchen has been moved to the ground floor and is connected to the upper floor by a new loft. For example, a spatial whole has been made from an obsolete housing type. The intervention clearly shows the architectural and spatial potential of this commonly used housing type in this part of Amstelveen.
