Edwardian Period House, Wandsworth London

This period house in Wandsworth was bought as a family home in this leafy London suburb, and although the space it offered the client was generous, parts of the property were extremely tired and desperately needed updating. The client felt they wanted us to focus on creating a great master bedroom suite and provide them with a luxurious en-suite bathroom and also a boutique hotel style bedroom both of which should reflect their classic contemporary taste with some additional eclectic detailing. For the reception room they wanted a restful, neutral palette palette of quiet tones to act as a backdrop to show off some key mid century pieces and artwork, and also some bespoke storage solutions.

What was the creation / planning process
As the client loved natural stone, we used the same type of marble extensively in the bathroom, but to ensure we kept texture and interest throughout we used different types of tiles on the floor and walls. The floor had mosaic tiles, combined with metro type wall tiles and larger slabs were used to clad the bottom part of the wall and the bath. We designed a completely bespoke bathroom featuring a made to measure vanity unit with a marble worktop. To add depth to the space, we also clad the wall above the vanity in mirror glass but then mounted a vintage brass framed mirror and a pair of nickel box lights on top of that to give it a glamorous retro feel.

For the Reception Room and Bedroom we designed the neutral colour palettes and meticulously planned these so as to provide a cohesive look as you travel from room to room through the house. The Reception features a beautiful oil painting above the fire place that acts as a focal point of the scheme, and this is flanked by bespoke cabinets either side with wall clad smoky antique mirror glass panels. We also sourced furniture and accessories for all rooms down to the last detail, including vintage mid century pieces and a collection of artwork.

How did the project go?
The project was completed in six months and as we were also project managing on site for the client we were able to ensure that the designs were executed and realized thoroughly, and were on schedule and budget.

What was your favourite room or part of the project?
We were extremely pleased with the bathroom as the client said that whenever she uses the room, she always feels that she’s gone somewhere else like a luxury boutique hotel as the scheme is so special. Throughout the process, the meticulous thought that we had given to all the design elements both large and small had come together as a beautifully detailed scheme and as this room gave her pleasure every day we felt we had exceeded her brief, which is testament to any good design.

Were there any issues or problems you encountered during the project?

In the bathroom although all the stone specified is Carrera marble, we used slightly different types of tiles. On site we found that between some of these the variation in colour was a little too great, but this was easily resolved as we work with a great supplier who understands our meticulous attention to detail and we hand picked replacements that were an excellent colour match.
