The home’s gracious architecture is distinctly American and feels fresh and modern despite stylistic roots that can be traced back to New England country houses. A new/old juxtaposition of time periods and styles is a running theme, and this considered mix is skillfully celebrated through the home’s interior architecture and furnishings. Spaces are classic, yet contemporary, with layers of color and texture, and historical touches that create a true storybook home.

This 9,200 square foot home was designed for a family that shares a love of books and learning, the interiors feature references to antiquities and curiosities of every kind. The dramatic wallcovering in the dining room was inspired by the marbled lining of an antique book, and it sets the tone for what one finds throughout the home. Seamlessly exploring a color palette that ranges from earthy neutrals to moody jewel tones, the material palette is refreshingly intended to patina over time. Elements such as copper gutters, lime-washed masonry, plaster walls, antique butcher block countertops, unlacquered brass cabinetry and lighting, and heirloom marble varieties that have only recently been re-quarried are just a few of the touches that contribute to the sense that this masonry home has been on site for generations.

Punctuated by massive steel doors and windows reminiscent of a charming old factory, the home is bathed in natural light and offers exquisite views of the surrounding grounds. European white oak flooring was lightly cerused and waxed to provide a raw, casual style, but was laid in herringbone and pinwheel patterns for an elevated sense of interest in special spaces. Classic detailing throughout the home beautifully juxtaposes the modern art, textiles and furnishings, adding to the home’s unique style, its reverent sense of history, and a truly modern sensibility.
