Variation and repetition in the backyard

A garden design for a modest area requires a lot of thought. On the one hand to optically enlarge the space, on the other hand to make optimal use of every square centimeter – without the use being ‘dominating’. Three leitmotifs applied to this backyard: a maximum of greenery, living space for the family and places to enjoy the sun.

Kloeke materials and geometry

The design has two paving surfaces in old baked clinkers, with a green zone in between. This in turn is divided into three planes by a playful pattern of concrete slabs in atypical shapes. The robust materials and lots of green contrast with the tightly plastered wall of the firewood shed at the back of the garden.

Layered planting

A water element brings peace and at the same time dynamism: the mirror pond of zinc attracts fauna such as insects and birds that come to bathe there. The water feature is also a subtle eye-catcher for the residents. In terms of planting, evergreen bulb volumes of boxwood provide a “dressed up” image in all seasons. Additional layers of planting with a fan of flower bulbs enhance the visual spectacle in spring and early summer.

Serene atmosphere

To keep the whole thing peaceful, a lot of attention was paid to the repetition of materials. For example, the stucco of the shed matches the neighbors’ extension. And the custom planters with grooves harmonize with the garden gate. Even in the evening, this garden is a pearl to see and experience, thanks to the mood lighting that subtly puts eye-catchers in the spotlight.
