\nINTERIORS INTERVIEW THE PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE OF BEDDELEEM<\/strong>
\n\u201cBeddeleem originally started out in 1950 as a plastering company, specialised in waterproof cellars
\nand ornamental moulding,\u201d Koen explains. \u201cBut the company only experienced true growth once it
\nstarted installing suspended ceiling systems, adopted from the USA. Plasterboard walls followed soon
\nafter, which then evolved into the increasingly popular partition walls.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIn 1989, we asked ourselves the following question: shouldn\u2019t this be a modular and relocatable
\nsystem?\u201d Koen inquires. \u201cWhy aren\u2019t we developing our own partitions? And what about windows and
\ndoors? We wanted a system that was easy to assemble and disassemble, while steadily growing and
\nintegrating our own production throughout the process.\u201d<\/p>\n
But that wasn\u2019t the last of it for Beddeleem: \u201cWe had ceilings, we had partitions \u2013 what else do you
\nneed in an office?\u201d Koen asks. \u201cAlthough times have changed, back then, you required a lot of storage
\nspace. Which led to us making cabinets \u2013 ones that also worked as partitions. After cabinets,
\nfreestanding furniture followed, and that\u2019s when we realised, we essentially had a one-stop shop on
\nour hands. In addition to our products, we then started offering a total fit-out service, including the
\ncoordination of more technical elements in specific projects, such as electricity and HVAC systems,
\nflooring, painting, and more in offices, educational, healthcare, sport and governmental environments.<\/p>\n

\n<\/strong>Jochen further elaborates on the one-stop shop model: \u201cBy adopting this model, we are able to
\nunburden clients and provide a great diversity in products and services \u2013 something that\u2019s greatly
\nappreciated. Through a dedicated project manager, clients benefit from the flexibility of working directly
\nwith Beddeleem for custom requests. Our vertical integration also means we have specialists in all areas: fire resistance, acoustics, sustainability\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
\nright departments, along with our automation and digitalisation projects, , all our knowledge remains
\nin-house in our production site in Belgium. Our capacity is significant, and we are recognised as a
\nClass 8 (category D, ed.) contractor in Belgium, which is the highest class available and most capable
\nof taking on complex, large-scale projects.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n<\/strong>\u201cFor those reasons, we can quickly accommodate upcoming trends and follow market evolutions,
\nallowing us to provide full customisation and specific customer requests,\u201d Koen explains. \u201cAnd we\u2019re
\ntalking about more than just colours: customers can choose their level of acoustics, fire resistance,
\ntype of materials\u2026 Just ask and Beddeleem will deliver on it.\u201d Jochen expands with an example: \u201cThe
\npast few years, we\u2019ve experienced an increase in requests for improved acoustics and curved
\npartitions. Thanks to our extensive R&D team, we\u2019ve been able to finetune such specific requests.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n<\/strong>The current market and workspace interior trends have also influenced how Beddeleem tackles
\nprojects: \u201cThe direction of today\u2019s market is a little unclear for now. Clients have become more risk-
\nadverse and won\u2019t start building without guaranteed tenants. On the other hand, there\u2019s a major focuson energy-efficient renovations in older buildings to match European sustainability norms and building
\ncodes,\u201d Jochen observes. \u201cThese renovations present interesting opportunities for our products: our
\nJB COOL climate ceilings are a great example of how clients can easily reduce energy consumption and costs.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nfrom open spaces to closed offices, to New Ways of Working, and finally to ActivityBased Working \u2013
\nfewer people grouped together, and rooms available for dedicated activities such as meetings,
\ninformal chats, and concentration zones,\u201d Koen mentions. \u201cConviviality and a central socialisation area
\nare a big thing in offices nowadays. The trick is mapping out your different divisions and observing the
\ninteractions between them and placing them in a logical way to benefit productivity. That\u2019s when \u2013 and where \u2013 an architect can work their magic.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n<\/strong>\u201cThe post-COVID return-to-office policy has made people desire a homey, cosy atmosphere in an
\noffice,\u201d Jochen adds. \u201cOur production in square metres has gone down per project, but the quality of
\nitems has gone up. Luxury aesthetics and acoustics are more in demand.\u201d
\nJochen underlines the importance of employer branding when it comes to office design: \u201cAn office
\nshould be a place people willingly want to visit. When designing an office space, architects should
\nalways respect and understand the culture of a company \u2013 you can\u2019t change a company\u2019s culture by

\n<\/strong>But how is Beddeleem\u2019s culture ingrained within the company? Jochen and Koen explain their
\napproach as a Best Managed Company and the company\u2019s attitude towards digitalisation, structure, and sustainability.<\/p>\n
\nthe title has held us accountable and has brought structure to how we evaluate and report within Beddeleem.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nadopter. Koen recalls, \u201cWe\u2019ve been ISO-certified with ISO 9001 since 1999. Although this certification
\nmainly focuses on quality, the true value lies in the organisational model behind it \u2013 formalising quality
\nchecks and implementing the company\u2019s know-how in an automated system.\u201d<\/p>\n
\ncompany evolve over time from a paper-based system to a digital one. We were a pioneer in
\npaperless warehouse management, and all our projects are fully documented within this system,
\nincluding every last nut and bolt. We\u2019re always looking to optimise these systems and grow alongside
\nthe times.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n<\/strong>\u201cAs for sustainability,\u201d Koen continues, \u201cwe achieved our ISO 14001 certification back in 2011 \u2013 which
\nwas unheard of at the time for a fit-out company.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nit from different angles within Beddeleem. We were the first company in the world to achieve the
\nCradle to Cradle Certified\u00ae Silver label for our partitions in 2016 \u2013 which has been renewed and
\nupgraded in the meantime. Beddeleem has been producing and installing circular partitions for over 35
\nyears, long before the emergence of a circular economy, reassembling and reusing them repeatedly
\nwithin the same buildings and for the same clients. In the last five years, we started receiving more
\nrequests for second-hand partitions. As a result, in 2021, we started the Beddeleem Circular project toassess the quality of our materials for reuse, making our used products available across projects and
\nclients through our Reuse range.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n<\/strong>\u201cThis is only a recent development, but our other sustainability initiatives have been around for much
\nlonger,\u201d Jochen remarks. \u201cWe have several goals we want to achieve by 2030, stipulated by our
\nTaking Climate Action label. As a company, you need to take responsibility for the planet, and we are
\nalways looking to improve. We have 4.200 solar panels for our manufacturing, and our employees are
\nequipped with electric vehicles \u2013 including an electric truck as our latest addition. Our new building will
\nrun on electricity and will be equipped with heating pumps. These investments cost time and money, but over time, you reap the rewards.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nthis topic,\u201d Koen adds, \u201cand sustainability remains a significant motivator for our entire ten-person R&D
\nteam. We\u2019re currently researching the acoustic and fire-resistant properties of our rockwool insulation,
\nand we\u2019ve replaced suppliers that are still using harmful substances in their products. We\u2019ve also
\ndetermined that recycled aluminium is more feasible, cheaper, and sustainable to use, and is now
\npresent in our products by up to 70%. Again, these things cost time, money, and effort, but being able
\nto offer a more sustainable alternative will benefit our company in the long run.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n<\/strong>Along with the company\u2019s sustainability goals, Beddeleem is also looking towards the future from a
\nbusiness perspective. Having recently opened a new office in Switzerland, Koen and Jochen talk about future growth.<\/p>\n
\nventure with our Swiss partners in 2024. We\u2019re still very focused on our home markets, but the
\nopportunity to work together with someone who is very attuned to the local market and who believes in
\nour products was too interesting to pass up,\u201d Jochen explains. \u201cIf a similar opportunity were to arise in another country, we\u2019re open to exploring it.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nexpansion,\u201d Koen clarifies. \u201cOur strategy is currently very opportunistic. We\u2019ve been lucky to
\nexperience stable growth that matches our capacity and market demand. Exponential growth wouldn\u2019t
\nbe healthy or sustainable. We just want to keep going in the same way we\u2019ve always done.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
