Garden designer Noël van Mierlo has a weakness for trees and tough architecture. This project in Utrecht’s Bosch and Duin is evidence of that. The garden at this sleek new construction demonstrates an intense connection to the house and the surrounding landscape. For peak realization, Groenregie was on hand.

Lively tranquility

The home with spacious volumes and lots of glass overlooks a forest with inspiring art objects by Juul Rameau. These fit the philosophy of the coaching practice at home as well as the love of art that the residents cherish. To clarify the entrance to the practice, the front yard was laid out with long, raised plant boxes framed in Corten steel. In parallel, we see a row of Douglas fir posts. The exuberant low greenery softens the symmetry and exudes tranquility. The same applies to the paving: natural materials such as Japanese gravel, baked clinkers and tiles in shades of gray and sand.

Creating connections

The garden design is maximally coordinated with the architecture and interior of the home. Clean lines, soft tones, large volumes and an understated aesthetic. The sunken garden on the side lets daylight flood in, while from the basement room you have a beautiful view of the peaceful greenery. Height differences were accommodated by organically shaped structures in Corten steel, generously “dressed” with plants that thrive in shade. In the backyard adorns a beautiful mirror pond. From the covered terrace with lounge furniture, you look out on reflecting water and the forest. The pond echoes the house – wonderful to see that connection between home and garden design.

From lounge to wellness

To fill out the large proportions of the outdoor space, there are several places to unwind. Sometimes on tiles, sometimes on decking. The outdoor furniture includes the exclusive Belgian brand Tribù. On one of the terraces, partly bordered by tall trees, there is a Jacuzzi. The floor and wall are made of high-quality composite decking. Wellness under the treetops – the ultimate in relaxation and oneness with nature. Here you are extremely tucked away, with maximum privacy and a beneficent feeling for body and mind.

Totally balanced

In terms of materials, Corten steel, various woods and natural pavement predominate. All durable and timeless, perfectly suited to the chosen plantings and woodland setting. Water also plays to its strengths, both in the mirror pond and the water table. The combination of clean, rectilinear volumes with organic infill creates a balanced whole with a strong visual appeal. A garden in balance, exciting and calming at the same time. Thanks to the fruitful collaboration between van Mierlo and Groenregie, this design became a picture – from drawing board to construction super successful.
