architecture as craft…
For DMOA, architecture is the result of a highly intensive craft-based process. Every project starts with a blank page. The first strokes already contain the seed of a concrete building. What is drawn must be buildable. To achieve this, we work in a very artisanal way, like a master builder. We seek close collaboration with the craftspeople needed to bring the building to life. When necessary, we experiment with materials and products ourselves. In this craft-driven process, we embrace traditional techniques and materials while continuing to draw inspiration from our rich architectural heritage.
…versus the ingenious
This craft-based way of working is strengthened by our curiosity about the remarkable technologies of our time. Architecture stands at the start of a new era. Intelligent buildings, interactivity, robotization of the construction process, artificial intelligence, virtual reality… As engineers, we are keen to make full use of the possibilities being developed today.
We learn from the authentic, we embrace the new. This fusion creates something new.
innovation through experiment
Without experimentation, our projects do not take shape. Experimenting has become second nature. For our architecture, we often cannot rely on ready-made solutions. We know that we can also choose the more difficult path. DMOA experiments on every level. For a house in Kontich, we developed a completely new type of façade system in Corten steel. In Heverlee, we built round concrete walls that you would think were finished with tree bark. The façade of our new office is being built in just 10 cm thick rammed concrete, and for a house in Blanden we developed a very specific detailing for “stamp-sized windows” (awarded first prize at the Schrijnwerk Awards).
innovation through bringing together diverse disciplines
When different disciplines work together, fireworks can happen, something exciting, something new. DMOA is exceptionally skilled at bringing people together to take a project to another level. We coordinate the entire process and motivate all parties to create something extraordinary. Our Maggie is the best example of this. The collaborations are too numerous to mention and come from widely varying fields: universities (KUL), public organizations (IWT, FIT, various ministries,…), manufacturers (Vermako, Vervaeke,…), aid organizations (UNHCR, MSF, IRFC,…) NGOs, humanitarian non-profits,… In January, we won the prestigious Henry van de Velde Award for Life Quality for Maggie. There were many people on stage…
innovation through courage
To develop something new, one must be willing to leap into the dark. To begin something without knowing where it will end. DMOA has the courage needed to take on such a challenge, and the determination to bring it to a successful conclusion.
context-driven design…
Every realization by DMOA is different. Every building has its own identity.
We do not pursue a fixed style; we opt for a specific approach. The boundary conditions define the method. Context determines the design. Architecture does not stand on its own; it must be embedded in its surroundings and landscape. It must add value to the space around it. DMOA therefore looks beyond the building itself, as far as the building has impact. Every transition between the project and the surrounding landscape or built environment, between the building and its contents, between the concrete and the abstract, is analyzed and, where necessary, an appropriate solution is devised.
…and involvement with the client
The diversity of our projects is also linked to our clients. They each have their own program, preferences and taste. DMOA listens carefully and senses what is needed. We do not merely aim to meet the client’s brief. We try to broaden their way of thinking. The result is therefore always a surprise.
the search for the right atmosphere
DMOA uses every possible architectural element to achieve the right atmosphere for a particular space, building or landscape. Proportions (in all dimensions), natural light, artificial light or candlelight, rough or smooth materials, matte or glossy, hard or soft… the tactile, the acoustic and even the olfactory dimension… everything is brought together into one harmonious whole.
The right atmosphere strengthens and expands human activity, actions and communication. It simply feels right.
new social engagement
DMOA’s reference list consists mainly of private residential projects. New builds and renovations, small and large, interiors and exteriors. For everything that crossed our path, we pursued thorough solutions and made the best of the given situation. We gave each family its own beautiful biotope.
With every project, we want to set a good example. Yet the social relevance remains limited. That is why, for the past few years, we have been embracing a new social commitment. From our own identity, we want to use our capabilities to enrich society, make our cities and villages more livable, and give our natural green spaces new breathing room. The first projects in the urban fabric are a fact, and many more are in the pipeline.
Worldwide, DMOA aims to develop solutions that increase opportunities for displaced persons and refugees. Our Maggie is only the first step in that direction.
