Advantages of a thatched roof
If you choose a thatched roof, you are making a sustainable choice and an authentic character. Thatched roofs have many advantages. For example, the reeds are hollow inside which gives it good insulating properties. This means that in winter it can more easily keep cold out and heat in, and in summer it can keep coolness in well and keep heat out. A thatched roof is a perfect addition to an energy-efficient home for this reason. A thatched roof can last at least about 25 years. If properly maintained, thatched roofs can last as long as 35 to 40 years.
Different thatched roof types
A distinction is usually made between two types of thatched roofs, namely: open thatched roofs and closed thatched roofs (also called screw roofs). In open thatched roofs, the thatch is bound on reed slats and the layers are applied from the bottom up with special tools. A longer time were and reservations about thatched roofs because of fire safety. Reed is a natural product that is very fragile and can quickly turn into a large fire in a small house fire. However, with the advent of the screw roof, this has greatly improved the fire safety of the thatched roof. This is because with screw roofs, the thatch is placed on a dense substrate such as plywood or insulation boards.
