Home for the arts
In a former industrial area in Amsterdam North, a shell apartment complex was completed where residents have complete freedom to design their own homes. The open loft space with no further infill and a double-height ceiling allowed i29 to create a completely custom-designed interior for a writer and art collector.
Displaying the large collection of art in the ultimate way was the starting point, so we designed detailed custom cabinet walls and integrated glass display cases to exhibit the artworks. On the first floor, the entrance, kitchen and living room are in open communication with each other. Within the double height of the loft, an additional floor level was created for additional living space with a bathroom, two bedrooms and office space. The closet walls visually connect the two floors and also integrate a staircase upstairs.
The custom-designed kitchen and cabinets throughout the apartment are done in a combination of wood and gray surfaces. The clear simple spatial interventions contrast with the colorful artworks, and complement each other well.
