Modern classic interior with preserved character

The first things you notice are the windows: colored glass set into the upper sections, light pooling across the floor, and the quiet shift from old joinery to fresh plaster. In the modern classic interior of this century-old house, the renovation keeps the original presence of the rooms visible while introducing a calmer, more deliberate arrangement. High ceilings remain part of the experience, and the restored stained glass windows give each room a slower rhythm than a standard refurbishment would allow.

Stained glass windows and a measured palette

Muted paint colors form the base of the interior renovation, leaving space for the materials to speak for themselves. Rather than filling the rooms with competing finishes, the walls stay restrained and let the glass, wood, and stone do the work. That approach gives the house its clearest thread: heritage is not treated as decoration, but as part of the room structure. The stained glass windows catch daylight at different moments, while the surrounding surfaces stay quiet and finely detailed.

In the seating areas, the eye moves from the window bays to the floor and back again. A large rug softens the wooden boards, and the furniture sits low against the taller room volume. The effect is not theatrical; it is built from proportion. Vintage pieces from the twenties, together with a weathered mirror above the fireplace, introduce references to the period without turning the house into a display case. The room still reads as lived in, with art and collected objects placed where they can be seen rather than announced.

A custom kitchen placed into the old structure

The kitchen sits within a darker line of joinery, with tall cabinet fronts rising toward the ceiling and keeping the room visually ordered. Here the custom kitchen design is not separate from the architecture. It follows it. The cabinetry is built in, the lines are straight, and the composition respects the height of the room instead of cutting it down. Recessed ceiling lights are set into the plaster above, marking the work zone without adding visual clutter.

Stone appears again in the kitchen and fireplace areas, where marble gives the surfaces a sharper edge. The marble fireplace is one of the clearest anchors in the house: a fixed point around which softer textiles and more modest pieces can settle. Nearby, the custom joinery keeps storage and service functions tucked into the wall plane, which allows the room to remain open in outline even when it is furnished for daily use.

Dark fronts, light walls, clear lines

The contrast between dark fronts and pale walls gives the kitchen its structure. It is a useful contrast, not a decorative one. Cabinetry reaches upward, creating a strong vertical line that responds to the high ceilings, while the lighter wall surfaces prevent the room from feeling heavy. In photographs of the project, the ceiling lights sit almost flush, so the geometry of the room stays legible. This is where the modern classic interior is most evident: in the way new elements respect the scale of the old house.

High ceilings and the return of older details

The restored high ceilings are more than a background feature. They create space around the furniture, around the window openings, and around the details that have been brought back into view. Glass panels, trim, and framing elements all benefit from that extra height. In a house that had not been maintained for decades, the renovation had to do more than refresh finishes. It needed to recover the dignity of the structure itself, especially where the original quality of the house was still visible underneath later wear.

The rooms change character as the light shifts across them. At some moments the colored glass reads as a soft band near the top of the windows; at others, the whole opening becomes more important than the decoration within it. That movement matters. It keeps the house from feeling fixed in one era, even though its details clearly belong to a specific one. The result is a room sequence that can hold both daily life and carefully chosen objects without losing the sense of volume.

Built-in niches and edited surfaces

Across the walls, built-in niches and custom joinery keep the storage and display areas understated. The photograph with the speckled black-and-white wall surface and open shelving shows how the project uses texture in small doses. Nothing is overdrawn. A patterned tile floor appears in another view, shifting the base of the room from wood to ceramic and giving the plan a slightly different cadence. These changes in finish help the house feel layered rather than uniform.

Textiles play a quiet role throughout the interior. Rich fabrics soften the chairs, a large rug grounds the seating area, and the curtain edge by the window adds another surface for the light to touch. Even the decorative objects feel considered in relation to the room’s proportions. The aged mirror above the fireplace reflects both the wall and the room around it, extending the depth without asking for attention. It is a small move, but an effective one.

A family home shaped by art and travel

What gives the house its final energy is the mix of art, design, and personal pieces brought in after the renovation. Those objects sit comfortably against the restored shell and the custom elements. Rather than competing with the building, they activate it. The house now reads as a place where a young family can live among strong surfaces, collected furniture, and the traces of a century-old structure. The modern classic interior carries that mix well because it leaves room for objects to have meaning without letting them overwhelm the rooms.

In that sense, the project is as much about editing as it is about making. Old details were repaired, new joinery was built in, and the palette was kept steady enough for the materials to settle into place. The stained glass windows, the custom kitchen, the marble fireplace, and the high ceilings each do a different job, but they belong to the same spatial order. That order gives the house clarity, while the layered objects, textiles, and finishes keep it from becoming static.
