Ekelhoff Keukens: where kitchen inspiration meets craftsmanship

Custom kitchen with island in dark smoked oak

Dark oak fronts set the tone before the room opens up to the view. The custom kitchen with island sits in that frame with a deep brown-black veneer, a matte finish, and crisp panel lines that keep the composition steady. Across the island and the wall units, the darker wood meets a concrete-look surface, so the eye moves from grain to stone-like texture without a hard break.

Island, wall units, and the route beside the stairs

The island is more than a working surface here. It carries the sink zone, a thick concrete-look top, and a plinth that grounds the composition close to the floor. Behind it, the tall storage wall keeps the same dark rhythm, while the stair partition cuts the space with black vertical slats. That open screen is not a background detail; it marks the transition between kitchen and stair area and keeps sightlines active through the room. The result is a kitchen with stair partition that feels tied to the architecture rather than placed in front of it.

Fronts, surround panels, the bar plate, and the half-open stair divider come from the same workshop line, which makes the joinery read as one continuous set of elements. The smoked oak veneer has a visible wood pattern, but the matte titanium lacquer mutes the reflection. This keeps the dark finish from becoming glossy or heavy. On the island, the concrete-look worktop and matching base give the centre piece a solid edge, while the long horizontal lines keep the volume calm and legible.

A concrete-look worktop that shapes the centre of the room

The concrete-look worktop is the clearest counterpoint to the smoked oak veneer. It appears on the island, the back wall, and the plinth around the island base, so the material repeats in different thicknesses and uses. That repetition gives the room its structure. Instead of a decorative accent, the surface acts as a working plane, a visual base, and a link between the kitchen furniture and the darker wall composition. The concrete-look worktop stays understated, which lets the wood grain remain visible.

At the back wall, a second sink unit sits in a recessed niche. The opening breaks the flat run of cabinetry and gives the wall a deeper profile. Light falls into the recess and catches the upper shelf line, so the niche reads clearly even when the rest of the wall stays dark. This illuminated kitchen niche is one of the most precise details in the project: it adds a functional point for washing up and creates a pause in the long panel wall. The ledge, the recess, and the light strip work together without calling attention to themselves.

Linear light above the work zone

Several ceiling spots and slim linear fixtures run above the kitchen zone, tracing the length of the room rather than washing it all at once. The linear kitchen lighting draws attention to the island and the wall behind it, especially where the niche and sink zone meet the darker panels. In the evening, those light bars define the kitchen edges cleanly. By day, they sit quietly against the ceiling and leave the wood, stone-look surfaces, and glass details to do the work.

Dark smoked oak kitchen details in close view

Seen up close, the dark smoked oak kitchen is all about the surface finish and the edges. The veneer has a black-brown cast, but the visible wood figure keeps it from turning flat. The matte titanium lacquer softens the reflection and lets the join lines stay readable. Around the island and wall units, the detailing is tight and spare. That restraint matters, because the room already has several strong elements: the stair opening, the wide island, the recess in the back wall, and the long dark cabinetry run.

The appliances are integrated into the composition without extra framing. The cooking zone sits in the island with extraction built into the cooktop, and the tap arrangement includes a Quooker Combi. Miele appliances are part of the setup as well. The photograph shows how the work zone stays visually ordered: sink, hob, and prep surface are separated but close enough to keep movement direct. The kitchen island with sink works as the main working field, while the back wall supports the secondary washing point in the niche.

Material contrast without visual noise

What keeps the room readable is the way each surface has a clear job. The wood veneer gives the fronts depth. The stone-look finish carries the horizontal planes. Glass and light open small breaks in the darker mass. Even the stair divider participates in that rhythm, because the black slats filter views instead of blocking them. The kitchen with stair partition therefore reads as part of a larger interior sequence, not as a separate object dropped into a living area.

The project also shows how a bespoke layout can use repetition without becoming monotonous. The same dark tones return on the cabinetry, the bar plate, and the stair screen, but the shift in material, angle, and light keeps each part distinct. The result is quiet rather than bare. You notice the way the island projects into the room, how the niche is cut into the wall, and how the linear lighting picks up the length of the composition. Those are the moves that hold the kitchen together.

From one angle, the room feels anchored by the island. From another, the dark wall and stair partition take over and pull the eye sideways. That change in focus is useful in a project like this, because it gives the kitchen more than one reading. It can be used as a working zone, a circulation point, and a visual link between the stair area and the rest of the interior. The custom kitchen with island stays central, but the surrounding architecture continues to speak.
