Ekelhoff Keukens: where kitchen inspiration meets craftsmanship

Handleless white island kitchen with open bookcase across two levels

The first thing you notice is the height. White fronts stop cleanly against a room that keeps rising, while the island sits low and long beneath a line of light and shadow. This handleless white island kitchen works in a double-height room, where a mezzanine with glass balustrade looks down onto the cooking zone and a lounge corner sits above it. The open volume gives the kitchen room to breathe, but it also sharpens every material choice: white satin-finish fronts, pale worktops, oak inserts and the dark lines of the balustrade.

A kitchen island set under a tall ceiling

The island is the visual anchor. Its white base is paired with a worktop that reads as wood in the photos, and the grain breaks up the smooth surfaces around it. From this angle, the island is not a separate object but part of a larger living space, with the kitchen extending into the room rather than closing it off. The kitchen island with extractor keeps the cooking surface clear enough to read as one continuous plane, while hanging lights hover above the counter and mark the center of the room.

Behind the island, the handleless white island kitchen continues in straight runs of cabinetry. The fronts are calm and precise, with no handles interrupting the joints. A set of tall cupboards holds the built-in appliances, and the darker openings of the equipment break the white field just enough to give the wall rhythm. The composition is measured rather than busy, and the tall ceiling makes the vertical lines stand out even more.

Oak details soften the white surfaces

Oak appears in small but repeated gestures. It shows up in the fronts above the sink, returns in the open shelving and reappears at the bartable edge and in the bookcase details. The wood has a light knotty grain, so the surface does not feel flat. In a room dominated by white lacquer and pale composite, those timber inserts do practical work: they break the run of cabinetry, catch the light differently, and give the eye a place to rest. This white kitchen with oak accents owes much of its character to that contrast.

The open shelving element is almost a second piece of architecture. It spans two levels and connects the kitchen to the upper room without blocking sight lines. The bookcase does not hide its structure; you can read the compartments, the timber panels and the open gaps between them. That openness matters in a double-height kitchen, because it lets the room remain legible from below while still giving the mezzanine a defined edge.

An open bookcase over two levels

Seen from the table zone, the double-height kitchen gains another layer through the open bookcase over two levels. The shelving is not treated as background storage. It is part of the room’s route, linking the lower living area to the mezzanine above. Glass balustrades keep that connection visible, and the slim black lines of the support details give the upper level a clear outline against the white walls.

The mezzanine with glass balustrade also changes the light. It leaves the upper opening clear, so daylight can fall deeper into the space and reach the kitchen surfaces below. You see this in the reflections on the glass, in the bright planes of the worktop and in the way the white fronts pick up the ceiling light. The upper lounge area feels close enough to the kitchen to belong to it, but separate enough to keep the volume readable.

Built-in appliances keep the tall cabinets compact

The tall cabinet wall contains the appliances without breaking the overall line of the room. An oven and a combi-steam oven sit in the upper storage run, with a small wine climate cabinet and a separate fridge-freezer nearby. Their dark doors punctuate the white composition in a controlled way. Nothing is over-described here; the detailing works because the cabinetry holds the equipment flush and lets the surfaces stay continuous across the wall.

At the sink and preparation zone, the white worktops continue across the base units and into the island. The composite surface reads as pale and even, but the surrounding oak prevents the room from becoming cold. The mix of materials is restrained: white satin fronts, pale stone, oak veneer and a few black technical accents. That restraint is what allows the room’s height, rather than decorative excess, to carry the project.

Details that give the room its rhythm

Several smaller elements keep the kitchen from becoming monotone. The open niches around the work area, the reflective inserts in some of the built-in compartments and the hanging lamps above the island all introduce different levels of depth. Even the brick wall and fireplace niche visible in the living area contribute to the scene, because they set a rougher texture beside the precise cabinetry. The kitchen does not sit in isolation; it shares the same open volume as the seating and dining areas.

From one view to the next, the composition shifts between smooth and textured, closed and open, low and tall. A white handleless island kitchen can easily disappear into its own surfaces, but here the room keeps giving back more detail: the oak on the island, the bookcase spanning two floors, the glass railing above, the fireplace niche at the edge of the frame. Those elements are what make the double-height setting matter, and they are what the eye returns to after the first glance.

Island kitchens of this kind depend on proportion as much as on finish. Here, the long island, the tall storage wall and the open shelving are set against each other so the room never feels compressed. The result is a kitchen that reads clearly from every angle, whether you stand at the island, look up to the mezzanine, or catch the bookcase in the background of the living area. The architecture gives the kitchen its frame; the materials give it its pace.
