Converted Commercial Building Into Three Homes

The brickwork still leads the eye first. At street level, the openings are crisp and regular, while the upper parts keep a more varied rhythm with wooden frames, stone sills, and masonry details above the windows. That mix gives the converted commercial building into homes a clear split between old and new, without breaking the front elevation into separate parts. Behind that face are three homes: two apartments and one house, all arranged to make the most of daylight, storage, and the limited footprint of a former commercial shell.

Brickwork, timber and a frontage that holds its shape

Seen from outside, the building keeps its own character through material rather than ornament. The brick facade is sharpened by wooden window frames and Belgian hardstone sills, while the pointed brickwork above the openings gives the wall a more crafted edge. Fraké wood appears in the frontage as a darker, more tactile layer against the masonry. The old front portion and the newer extension follow the same language, so the converted commercial building into homes reads as one address rather than a set of additions. The stone-look countertop has a solid, almost mineral presence, while the matte cabinet fronts keep reflections low. In the photos, the sink, tall oven columns, and integrated appliances sit flush within the joinery, so the kitchen reads as one continuous piece of furniture rather than a set of separate units. It is a custom kitchen with island that makes the planning visible.

Finish details are carried through carefully. The countertop has the look of stone but is described as practical and easy to clean, and the kitchen equipment is set into the joinery without visual clutter. That combination suits a converted commercial building into homes, because the original structure provides the shell while the interior has to work harder for everyday use. The kitchens do that work quietly: broad worktops, clear circulation, and enough room for the eye to travel from the island toward the windows.

Bathrooms with room for details, not just fittings

The bathrooms follow the same restrained language. Large wall tiles create broad surfaces, and the shower areas are enclosed with glass so the room keeps its depth. Built-in niches hold toiletries within the wall plane instead of pushing them onto shelves, and the fittings are kept visually slim. A rain shower and concealed taps complete the main bathroom spaces, while one bathroom includes a freestanding bath that sits close to the glazed partition. These are modern bathroom spaces in the plain sense of the term: practical, spare, and finished with enough precision that the smaller rooms still feel composed.

What stands out in the images is how little these rooms are forced to do visually. The tile joints stay regular, the sanitaryware is kept simple, and the glass panels prevent the rooms from closing in. That is especially important in a three homes conversion, where each dwelling has to carry its own level of privacy and function. The bathrooms do not try to be dramatic; they rely on proportion, light, and the clarity of the surfaces around them.

Two apartments, two very different ways of using the plan

The first apartment is compact but layered. It includes a bedroom, bathroom, toilet, cellar, and a woonkeuken, and a folding wall links the interior to the outside so the room can extend visually when open. The concrete floor and recessed spotlights keep the space spare, while the bathroom uses the available width well enough to accommodate a freestanding bath. In the second apartment, the plan stretches over two floors, with a generous terrace, Fraké timber cladding, and a screen that gives the outdoor area more privacy. A working corner is possible there too, and the attic space adds another bright level with more room to use in different ways.

Those two homes show how the converted commercial building into homes adapts to different ways of living without changing its core material language. One leans on compact efficiency and a strong connection to the outdoors. The other gains volume through height, terrace space, and a more flexible upper floor. In both cases, the daylight and the clean white finishes keep the rooms from feeling enclosed, even when the footprint is modest.

The house with the extra level and a private terrace

The third home is a house with its own extra floor and a more domestic sequence of rooms. It contains a woonkeuken, toilet, bathroom, two bedrooms, and a terrace outside. A roof light in the living room brings daylight deeper into the ground floor, which changes the feel of the room as soon as the sun shifts. The terrace sits behind a fence and screening, so the outdoor space becomes a private extension rather than a leftover corner. In this part of the project, the converted commercial building into homes reads most clearly as a house, with rooms arranged around daily routines rather than a shared apartment layout.

The terrace detail matters because it repeats the project’s main move: take an existing structure, open it where light is needed, and use material transitions to define each living zone. The paving, the fence, and the screen give the outdoor area its own edge, while the interior keeps flowing toward it through larger openings. Together they make the house feel settled within the conversion, not appended to it.

What ties the three homes together is not a single finish, but a consistent way of working with volume, light, and the original shell. The facade remains readable from the street, the interiors stay open and calm, and the rooms are arranged so every square meter has a role. That is the strength of this converted commercial building into homes: a former commercial structure turned into three distinct addresses, each with its own use of light, its own outdoor space, and a finish that stays close to the material facts of the building.
