Linfi: custom electrically operated floor hatches

Custom electric floor hatch

A round opening sets the tone before the hatch itself comes into view. Here, an electric floor hatch closes off a stair void inside a tower interior, and the custom shape does the work of the room. The opening is not squared off or forced into a straight line. Instead, the hatch follows a 3/4 round profile that sits neatly within the curved structure, bringing the stair opening closure into clear focus.

Glass meeting stone in the tower

The first reading of the project comes from the materials around the opening. Glass catches the light inside the shaft, while steel defines the edge of the construction and the handrails that run around it. Brick walls sit close to stone treads and pale structural parts, so the hatch is never seen on its own. It sits within a brick and stone interior where every surface reinforces the geometry of the tower.

That makes the custom floor hatch more than a cover. It becomes part of the spatial move that resolves the vertical opening. The circular plan of the tower would have made a standard solution awkward, so the shaped electric floor hatch follows the curve with precision. Its cut-out form gives the stair opening closure a clear outline without interrupting the round edge of the structure.

The 3/4 round shape closes the opening

The pacman-like geometry is the detail that sets this project apart. The 3/4 round shape allows the hatch to close the opening fully while staying true to the tower’s footprint. From above, the result reads as a measured intervention: a round void that has been brought under control by a shaped panel, with the surrounding steel handrail framing the move. The form is simple to read, but it had to be adapted carefully to work in this exact position.

Seen from another angle, the glass hatch detail sits against the rougher materials around it. Brick surfaces, stone edges and the curved opening give the hatch context, while the glass softens the visual weight of the closure. The result is a floor hatch in tower setting that feels anchored to the structure rather than applied to it. The hatch follows the opening instead of competing with it.

Placed with a crane

The installation itself left little room for improvisation. A large crane was needed to place the hatch, which says something about the access and the size of the intervention. In a tower interior, every move has to negotiate the narrow route of the shaft and the fixed edges of the existing structure. The crane lifted the custom floor hatch into position, where it could close the stair opening as intended.

That method also explains why the project reads so clearly in the photographs. The rounded opening, the metal elements around it and the visible construction details all point to a careful fit. The electric floor hatch had to land in exactly the right place, because the shape leaves little margin. Once set, it completes the opening without flattening the character of the tower space.

Steel rails, visible fixings and the rhythm of the interior

Across the interior, the steel handrail gives the opening a measured outline. It follows the curve of the shaft and marks the edge of the void, while the stair hardware and guide-like parts near the hatch add another layer of structure. These are not decorative extras. They show how the opening is controlled and how the hatch sits within the larger framework of the tower.

The photographs also show how the staircase continues below the hatch area, with stone treads and curved elements leading the eye downward. That downward movement is important. It turns the custom electric floor hatch into part of the circulation route, not just a closing panel. The view changes from the top of the shaft to the steps below, and the round opening keeps that connection visible.

Brick, stone and the glass hatch detail

Brick walls form the backdrop in several views, and the color and texture of the masonry make the glass hatch detail stand out. Stone appears in the stair treads, in the surrounding construction and in the base of the opening, where light falls across the edges. The materials are restrained, but they work together to make the shaped hatch legible from every angle shown.

From close up, the glass component is the quietest part of the composition. It reflects light without calling attention to itself, while the steel lines hold the shape in place. Together they give the electric floor hatch a crisp outline inside the tower interior. The opening is fully closed, yet the detail remains visible enough to show how the solution was tailored to the curved geometry.

A custom floor hatch made for a curved stair opening

What stands out here is the fit. The custom floor hatch follows the round opening closely, and that relationship is what gives the project its clarity. Rather than introducing a straight-edged insert into a curved setting, the shaped hatch respects the opening and closes it in one gesture. The stair opening closure reads cleanly because the profile has been adjusted to the tower, not the other way around.

That is why the project works best as a whole. The electric floor hatch, the steel handrail, the brick and stone interior and the glass detail all speak to the same circular geometry. The tower structure sets the frame; the hatch resolves the void. It is a simple reading, but one that depends on a shaped solution and precise placement. In the photographs, that precision is what holds the interior together.
