Van Mierlo Tuinen – Experience your Nature

Rural garden with swimming pool in a natural pond

Water sets the first line here. The swimming pool in pond sits low against the edge of a natural-looking water garden, so the rectangle of the basin reads less like a separate object and more like part of the landscape. From a distance, the surface catches the trees and the sky, while the darker border around the water keeps the eye moving between pool, reed growth and open grass. The result is quiet but never static; every shift in light changes the edge.

A pool that reads as part of the pond

The floating pool in pond effect comes from the way the basin is placed directly into the water setting. Instead of standing apart, the pool is framed by reflections, planting and a clear line of terrace material at the water’s edge. That geometry gives the project its tension: a sharp swimming area inside a rural garden with pond, softened by the surrounding reeds, trees and planted banks. The water does not just surround the pool; it defines how the entire garden is experienced.

Seen from above, the swimming pool in pond becomes a precise cut through a broader green setting. The surrounding water and the planted margins make the basin feel anchored in the site rather than added on top of it. On the ground plane, the transition is slower. A terrace by the pond links the pool to the rest of the garden, and the deck edge carries the view outward toward the trees and open lawn. It is a simple move, but it controls how you approach the water.

A poolhouse with a thatched roof and timber frame

The poolhouse with thatched roof gives the water zone a second volume to read against. Its roofline softens the silhouette, while timber elements and darker wall surfaces bring depth to the building. In several views, the structure sits just behind the pool or across the water, so the eye catches it in layers: roof, beam, wall, then garden. The material palette stays close to the rural setting. Reed, wood and stone are used where they can be seen and felt, not as decoration.

A nature stone wall and timber posts add weight to the poolhouse composition. Those details matter because the project depends on edges: where the terrace meets water, where the building meets planting, where the planted bank takes over from the hard surface. The architecture does not dominate the garden. It sits inside it, with the thatched roof lowering the profile and the timber parts marking the openings and overhangs. The result is a pool zone that feels closely tied to the ground around it.

Terrace edges that hold the view

The terrace by the pond is where the project becomes most tangible. Boards and hard edges run along the waterline, giving a place to sit, walk and look back across the pool and pond together. In some views, the terrace reads almost like a narrow platform between house, pool and planting. In others, it appears wider, with more room between the water and the poolhouse. Either way, it keeps the composition legible. You always know where the water starts and where the dry surface ends.

At the same time, the terrace avoids breaking the rural garden with pond into separate parts. Its lines are straight, but the planting around it is loose enough to blur the perimeter. That contrast is one of the project’s strongest moves: a clear swimming edge set inside a softer landscape. The eye can travel from the terrace boards to the reed banks, then on to the trees and open lawn. Each layer has its own texture, and each layer changes with the light.

Planting, birds and the wider farm setting

The garden was designed as part of a larger rural setting, and that reads in the planting. Flower borders, mature trees and water-side growth form a sequence of green areas around the pool. Birds are drawn to the trees and beds, and the garden feels connected to the activity around the farm, where horses, sheep and chickens are mentioned in the source text. Those references are not decorative extras; they place the pool inside a living landscape rather than a sealed-off leisure zone.

This connection to the surroundings also explains why the pool integrated into water feature works so well here. A conventional basin would have cut too sharply across the site. By placing the swimming area into the pond setting, the design keeps the water story continuous. Reeds, reflections and planted edges do much of the visual work, while the lawn opens up long views across the property. The garden can be read in one glance, but it reveals more as you move through it.

From empty field to layered garden

The source notes that the site was bare meadow about 3.5 years earlier, which makes the present layering of water, planting and buildings more striking. Early involvement in the construction team allowed the overall plan to be developed with the architect and client from the start. That early coordination shows in the way the routes, water edges and building placement fit together. Nothing feels retrofitted. The pool, pond, terrace and poolhouse all appear to belong to the same drawing, even when they are read as separate parts.

What gives the project its clarity is the sequence of views. One moment the swimming pool in pond is seen as a floating plane near the waterline; the next, the poolhouse with thatched roof anchors the opposite side of the scene. Then the eye moves to the planting banks, where grasses and flowering borders soften the hard edges. The garden never settles into a single image. It changes with the weather, the season and the angle from which you look at it, which is exactly what this rural garden with pond seems built for.

In the final view, the project reads as a landscape made for movement as much as for stillness. The water surface, the terrace by the pond and the timber-framed poolhouse create a route through the site, but the garden also rewards standing still. Reflections gather on the pond. Trees break the sky into fragments. The pool remains visible, yet partly dissolved into its setting. That is the strength of the composition: a clear intervention that never leaves the landscape behind.
