Vosplan Real Estate Development in the small-scale residential area ‘Bernardhoeve’. The residents of one of these villas appealed to Groenregie. The challenge: to create a rural garden with an unobstructed view of the polder and sufficient privacy.

In balance with natural context
The house is an eye-catcher, especially due to the specially designed roof and the close mutual relationship between inside and outside. The villa does justice to its surroundings and makes maximum use of the advantages of the location. The sturdy design calls for a garden with character and a choice of materials that match the architecture. In terms of planting, there had to be agreement with the polder environment. Sober, with large groups of balanced greenery and a few robust, ‘mature’ pollard willows. They were applied with the help of a large tap and deliberately planted a little crooked – just like in nature.

Tough pavement, rural green
On the roofed driveway, large Schellevis tiles are laid out in a random pattern, interrupted by thin lines of baked clinker bricks. Furthermore, we see split and a path of Schellevis step tiles; square planters with pear trees (conference) underline the rural atmosphere. Also in the front garden is a hidden terrace, south-facing and beautifully surrounded by a yew hedge and a multi-stemmed currant tree with a whimsical appearance. Gracefully waving grasses temper the whole and bring peace.

Carefree relaxation
A hot tub has been integrated under the roof of the house. Surrounded by wooden floors, walls and ceilings, this is a cozy and intimate place to immerse yourself. In the backyard – bordered on two sides by wide ditches – there is a sunken decking: the ideal place to enjoy a barbecue dish. There is also a decking path with surprising steps along the house. The warm wood contrasts beautifully with the lush greenery in a multitude of textures and leaf shapes. The pile walls provide an optical division of the garden into different zones, and add depth to the plot.

Great amenities
There is no lack of privacy: the high beech hedge on the property boundary provides a sheltered feeling and hides the neighbours’ shed from view. On the other hand, the vast polder environment is involved in the garden as much as possible. For a seamless transition with the landscape context, the planting was adapted to it. Lots of green with a few splashes of color, such as the red-orange flowers of the daylily. These, in turn, harmonize with the corten steel planter. The sophisticated lighting subtly puts the paths and other elements in the spotlight. The whole is a peaceful oasis with a mix of rural and timeless elements – just as the resident had in mind.
