Industrial – rural individuality
Own design
Pascalle and Patrick Smeets live in Kessenich (BE) in a sort of official residence. They had it built to their own design seventeen years ago; they also did the furnishing and finishing themselves. The duo owns ‘t Hoogehuys, a business with two home furnishing stores. Pascalle is the stylist there, Patrick the interior designer. One store they have located in an old customs office, which features mostly interiors in a rural-industrial atmosphere. In the other store near their own home, they display tough-country interiors.
Crafted hardware
At the center of the kitchen is the island. Patrick made it a very special combination with iron, glass, wood and composite. At the end of the island, you can see glass corners with drawers and an iron frame. The wooden drawers received an iron coating in the paint shop. A three-week oxidation process then follows, eventually producing this industrial effect. The oak kitchen cabinets were custom made by Patrick in his own workshop and are stained black.
Square buttons from Dauby were used as fittings. This brand provides hardware made of metal alloys, such as bronze and wrought iron. Pascalle: ” The other handles on the kitchen are also from the Dauby collection, as are the tiles behind the stove.” They are materials that fit here one on one. The combination of different designs is striking. On the cabinets against the walls, Pascalle chose Raw Bronze, whose copper hue nicely matches the warm tones of the wood and fronts. In turn, the handles on the island are done in Raw Metal. The rough, raw surface of those handles perfectly complements the sturdy countertop and bluestone floor. The bluestone is echoed in the seam of the island countertop and in the molding above the stove. These are all elements that do not immediately catch the eye, but make a space atmospheric.
