Circular hardstone bench

The circular hardstone bench traces a clear ring in the park, set low against grass and planting while the stone keeps its own weight and presence. Built in Belgian hardstone, the bench follows a continuous curve rather than a series of straight segments, so the eye reads it as one long line around the monument. Its surface shifts from smooth to worked stone, and that contrast gives the seat band a steady visual rhythm.

A ring made from many rounded elements

The full bench extends for 75 metres and is shaped into a near-perfect circle with a diameter of almost 25 metres. Every element was rounded before assembly, which keeps the line flowing as it turns around the central point. The total weight reaches 85 tonnes, and that scale is felt in the way the stone sits in the landscape: grounded, broad, and clearly meant to stay in place. As a natural stone park bench, it does not read as a loose piece of furniture but as part of the setting itself.

Seen from the side, the bench has a wide, flat top and darker vertical faces. That difference makes the upper band easy to read, especially where light catches the edge and the side surface absorbs it. The rounded geometry is visible in every panel, and the joints between elements remain disciplined enough to keep the circle legible without interrupting the line. It is a park bench in natural stone, but one with the scale of a built edge rather than a single seat.

Hand-finished stone that keeps its texture visible

What gives the bench its character is the hand-finished stone bench treatment across the surfaces. The stone was worked with jobbing, flame finishing and bouchardering, and those techniques remain visible in the texture. On the sides, the surface holds a fine roughness that breaks up the light. On the top, the finish is smoother and flatter, which makes the bench usable while preserving the material’s weight. The result is not polished stone everywhere, but a measured alternation between worked and calm surfaces.

The boucharded stone surface appears most clearly around the carved lettering. Here the stone is left rougher so the relief can stand out. That treatment gives the text a darker, more tactile background, and the raised letters sit forward instead of disappearing into the ring. The finish does what it should: it directs attention to the carved band without overworking the rest of the stone.

Carved text set into the circle

A continuous band of text runs around the bench in raised lettering. The wording is taken from a poem, but the page does not depend on reading every line from a distance. What matters visually is the way the inscription follows the curve and turns the seat into a circular reading path. The bench with carved text uses the stone itself as the frame, with the letters lifted from the roughened field around them. That change in texture makes the inscription legible as form, even before it is read as text.

Because the lettering is surrounded by a boucharded finish, the carved strip stands off from the rest of the bench. The surface around the letters is not decorative in the usual sense; it is functional to the inscription. It sharpens the transition between smooth and rough, between the broad stone band and the line of words. The effect is restrained and direct, which suits a stone workpiece that already carries a lot of visual mass.

From assembly to a finished park edge

The image set shows both the installation phase and the completed setting. During assembly, the rounded elements are supported on temporary understructures, with parts of the ground still open and uneven around them. That view makes the construction logic visible: large stone sections, handled in sequence, brought together to form the full ring. In another stage, the bench sits within a more settled park context, with lawn, trees and planting enclosing the circular line.

One image shows the bench as a base around a central monument, while others focus on the border where stone meets grass. Red flowers appear along part of the edge, adding a narrow band of colour against the grey hardstone. The bench does not try to disappear into the park. Instead, it marks out a clear perimeter and creates a fixed route around the centre, which is why the circle feels so deliberate in the wider landscape.

Stone, scale and setting working together

The surrounding green space softens the mass of the stone, but it does not weaken it. Trees, lawn and planting hold the bench in a quieter frame, while the broad ring keeps its outline intact. The monument at the centre gives the arrangement a strong focal point, yet the bench remains the element that defines the space at ground level. Its long curve, rough-sided faces and broad seating edge turn Belgian hardstone into a public border that can be seen from a distance and read closely at the same time.

As a circular hardstone bench, the project sits between landscape element and crafted stonework. It uses a material usually associated with thresholds, plinths and durable edges, then folds it into a continuous seat with an inscription running through it. The scale is large, but the gestures are precise: rounded elements, hand-finished surfaces and carved text placed where the texture can support it. That combination makes the bench easy to recognise in the park, even before the inscription is noticed.

Seen in profile or from above, the line never loses its order. The circle is stable, the stone is heavy, and the workmanship remains visible in the finish. For a project built outdoors, that clarity matters. The bench holds its shape against weather, grass and foot traffic, while the worked surfaces keep enough variation to show the hand behind the stone. It is a circular hardstone bench that depends on proportion, texture and the discipline of the curve rather than on ornament.
