Country garden with clean lines

The lawn reads like a drawing line, running past clipped edges, pale gravel and the white volume of the house. Around the renovated farmhouse, the country garden keeps its course with straight paths, low borders and planting that stays quiet in tone. The new outbuildings follow the same logic, so the whole outdoor setting feels measured rather than scattered. From the first view, the country garden connects the house, the terraces and the open land beyond.

A country garden shaped by long views

Open fields surround the house, so the garden does not need to compete with the landscape. Instead, the layout pulls back and leaves room for the view. Broad stretches of lawn give the site breathing space, while the planting beds stay restrained and low. That decision keeps the ground plane clear and lets the lines of the house and the garden carry through without interruption. It is a landscape garden in the plainest sense: open, readable and tied to the site around it.

The renovated main house and the newly built outbuildings form a compact group, yet the garden prevents the ensemble from feeling tight. Straight runs of paving and gravel lead the eye from one part of the plot to the next. The path edges are crisp, the lawn cuts are clean, and the borders sit low enough to preserve the wide view. In this country garden, the calm comes from order, not from ornament.

Terraces placed where the garden can be used

Several terraces are set into the plan, giving the outdoor living areas different positions around the house. One sits close enough to catch the day-to-day movement around the doors, while another opens further out to the lawn. Because the surfaces are kept simple, each terrace works as a clear pause in the layout rather than a decorative gesture. The result is a garden design that supports sitting, moving and looking out across the fields.

Those terraces also deal with the way the ground steps. Instead of hiding the change in level, the design uses it as part of the composition. Low walls and raised edges mark the transition and give the house a more settled base. The change is practical, but it also sharpens the outline of the building against the lawn. In the country garden, the level difference becomes a visible line, not a problem to disguise.

Paths and the driveway follow the same line

The driveway does not break away from the rest of the plan. It aligns with the garden lines and continues the same straight movement seen in the paths and edges. That makes access feel part of the whole site, rather than a separate technical strip. Gravel, paving and lawn meet in clear bands, and the route to the house remains easy to read. The driveway in this country garden is practical, but it also belongs to the garden composition.

Where the hard surfaces meet the planting, the transitions stay measured. There are no abrupt shifts in material. Instead, the lines run on, then stop, then resume in another place. That repetition gives structure to the plot and keeps the attention on the open space around it. The garden design works because each line has a role: one for walking, one for arriving, one for resting beside the house.

Beech hedges and planting that keep the edges quiet

Beech hedges draw the outer rooms of the garden into sharper focus. They create privacy without closing the site off from the fields, and they give the planting scheme a steady green frame. Inside that frame, the borders stay neutral in tone, with grasses and low planting used more for texture than for colour. This makes the country garden feel composed without becoming busy. The hedges stand out because the rest is held back.

Near the house, the planting beds are laid out in clear bands. Some run beside the paving, others sit against low walls or along the lawn edge. The repetition gives the garden a measured rhythm, and the materials are chosen to support that rhythm: clipped hedge, mown grass, pale stone, restrained planting. Nothing shouts for attention. The eye moves from one surface to the next and returns to the architecture, which remains the anchor of the plan.

Low walls mark the change in height

The level difference is handled with small but decisive moves. Low wall elements step the house up and make the rise in the ground legible. They also give the planting a place to sit, so the border lines do not collapse into the lawn. In the photos, these walls read as practical edges, but they also sharpen the geometry of the country garden. The shift in height becomes part of the layout instead of a disruption to it.

That same clarity shows at the planting edges. The beds are not overfilled, and the lawn is allowed to run right up to the hard lines. This keeps the garden open and gives the terraces room to function as outdoor living spaces. Even where the surfaces are simple, the detailing is careful enough to hold the whole composition together. The project relies on restraint, but not on emptiness.

Materials that keep the setting grounded

Riet, white walls and dark timber give the house and outbuildings a rural base, but the garden is what ties those elements to the plot. Gravel and paving add texture underfoot, while the lawn cools the scene and spreads the space out. The materials are familiar, yet the way they are drawn together makes the site feel calm and easy to read. In this country garden, the ground itself does a lot of the work.

Seen from different angles, the project keeps returning to the same principles: straight lines, broad lawn areas, hedges for privacy and terraces placed where they can be used. That consistency gives the landscape garden its clarity. It is not built on one gesture, but on a series of controlled moves that shape the approach, the sitting areas and the view across the field edges. The result is an outdoor setting that supports everyday use while leaving the landscape visible.

Even the more detailed views reinforce that reading. A glazed outbuilding, dark frames, the edge of a border, a strip of gravel beside the path: each element repeats the wider plan at a smaller scale. The country garden remains legible whether seen from the drive, the terrace or the lawn. It is a project of lines and surfaces, with enough openness to let the surrounding fields stay part of the experience.
