Whole home renovation with a generous extension and a calm, quiet basis

Light enters first. It slides across the black profiles of a large glass partition, catches the pale walls, and lands on the stone-like floor. That clear line of sight is what gives this home renovation its character: an authentic cottage was taken through a total renewal and given a generous extension, with verstilling as the stated basis. The result is not loud, but it is never plain. Small accents in stronger tones break up the calm surface at the right moments.

A calm framework for a full-house transformation

The project reads as a whole home renovation rather than a series of isolated rooms. Open transitions, straight ceiling lines and repeated built-in elements pull the spaces together. In the living areas, the eye moves easily from one zone to the next, helped by transparent divisions and a restrained palette of white, light grey, taupe and natural wood tones. The added extension does not fight the cottage character; it gives the plan more room to breathe, while leaving the quieter parts of the interior intact.

That quiet design principle is visible in the way surfaces are treated. A smooth wall finish, recessed lighting and tailored joinery keep visual noise to a minimum. Where the project needs emphasis, it comes from contrast rather than decoration: a dark frame around glass, a richer wood tone in the cabinetry, or a deeper accent on a paneled wall. The language is measured, but it never feels empty.

Large glass partitions that keep the plan open

One of the strongest gestures is the large glass partition renovation, built with black profiles that draw a sharp grid through the room. It separates without closing off, so the modern living room glass wall acts as both boundary and visual link. Behind it, the kitchen and living space remain connected by sightlines, while the darker metal edge gives the opening a crisp outline. The effect is especially clear where the glass meets the ceiling lights and the pale walls around it.

In another view, a glass divider runs alongside wood-toned kitchen fronts. The contrast is simple and effective: glass for openness, timber for weight and texture. Recessed spots in the ceiling give the space an even wash of light, which keeps the joinery legible and prevents the larger rooms from feeling overworked. This is a house renovation that uses transparency as a planning tool, not as decoration.

Kitchen and living area linked by sightlines

The kitchen sits within that same open rhythm. Its fronts are finished in a warm wood tone, with clean horizontal lines and no excess profile detail. Through the glass, the living room remains visible, so the room feels extended even when each zone has its own function. A statement chandelier with a gold frame and candle-like bulbs appears in the dining area, giving the neutral envelope one deliberate focal point without disturbing the larger calm.

Window details add another layer. In the imagery, a screen-like or lattice finish appears at the openings, and horizontal slats are visible on one of the windows. These elements soften views and filter light, which suits the restrained mood of the interior. They also echo the project’s overall preference for controlled edges: nothing is left to shout.

Built-in bookshelves and niches shaped into the walls

Much of the interest here comes from custom cabinetry with niches. Open pockets are built into the walls, some arranged symmetrically, others set in rectangular modules with a continuous shelf line. The built-in bookshelves are not separate furniture pieces placed against the wall; they are part of the architecture of the room. That makes the storage feel measured and deliberate, while still leaving space for books, objects and small pauses between the volumes.

Several images show this approach clearly. One zone uses a row of open niches with angled or stepped corners, while another combines warm wall colour with a white surround and a broad horizontal ledge. The repetition of openings gives the room a steady rhythm. In a different view, a glazed door sits beside a built-in zone, which lets the storage and the circulation space read together rather than compete.

Cabinetry that carries the room

The cabinetry does more than store things. It frames the room, sets the proportions and directs attention toward key features. In one composition, the niches are paired with a strong paneled wall in a pinkish rust tone. In another, the joinery is more subdued, but the same discipline remains: clear openings, clean edges and a careful relationship between solid surfaces and voids. This is where the home renovation feels most tailored, because every inset and shelf has a visible role.

The material palette stays close to the ground. Natural wood, pale paintwork, soft grey and sand-toned flooring carry most of the composition, while the accent colours appear in controlled doses. Those stronger tones are present, but they are not allowed to dominate the room. They work as punctuation marks along an otherwise calm sequence of surfaces.

A fireplace wall built into the cabinetry

The wood fireplace wall is one of the clearest anchors in the project. It sits within a tall cabinetry composition, with the fire opening set into a dark frame and flanked by storage on both sides. The wall reads as a single built form rather than a fireplace placed in front of a blank surface. That integration gives the room a strong centre, especially when paired with the open shelving and the hanging lights above the dining zone.

From a distance, the composition is almost architectural in its order. Up close, the texture changes: smooth painted panels meet the grain of the wood finish, and the black fire surround cuts a tight line into the larger wall. The result is restrained, but not severe. It adds weight to the room and gives the eye somewhere to settle, which is important in a plan that otherwise stays open and light.

Light, texture and the accents that keep it from flattening out

Recessed ceiling lighting appears throughout the renovation, often in a straight row that reinforces the clean geometry of the rooms. It keeps attention on the surfaces below: the built-in shelves, the glass partitions, the wood fronts and the stone-like floor. Because the light is tucked away, the larger volumes remain calm, and the details can do the work of defining each zone. Even the chandelier in the dining space feels part of that approach, acting as a single, readable gesture rather than a decorative overload.

The source text mentions “some sharper accents,” and the images show exactly where those accents sit. Rose, rust and stone-red wall details interrupt the pale base palette. A pink-toned panel wall, a deeper rust surface and the dark glass frame each add a small note of tension. They are placed with restraint, which is why they register so clearly. The home renovation keeps its quiet basis, but it is the contrast points that prevent the interior from becoming one-note.

What remains is a generous, carefully edited interior in which each room connects to the next through light, joinery and sightlines. The cottage origin is still legible, yet the extension gives the layout more depth and more open ground to work with. Large glass partition renovation, built-in bookshelves, a wood fireplace wall and a muted palette all support that reading. It is a whole home renovation shaped by control rather than display, and that gives the spaces their lasting clarity.
