Landhouse-style kitchen with an oak-veneer island and full-height cabinet wall

The tall cabinet wall sets the tone before the island even comes into view. White framed fronts rise to the ceiling, while the oak veneer on the central block brings a warmer note into the room. Here, a larger luxury kitchen with island was possible only after an extension in the same spirit as the 1910 country house, giving the kitchen its extra length and the dining area a place beside the fire.

luxury kitchen with island as the architectural starting point

The extension does more than add square metres. It gives the table and fireplace their own position and opens up the kitchen around them, so the working zone and the eating area can sit side by side without crowding each other. The framed fronts, panelled lines and pale painted surfaces lean into the landhouse character, but the layout remains direct: storage runs around the room, and the island anchors the centre.

That centrepiece is an oak veneer island with a long, rectangular profile. Its surface is broad enough to work from on both sides, and the material shift from painted cabinetry to wood gives the room a clear point of contrast. The island also carries the cooktop, so the main working position stays open to the room instead of being pushed against the wall.

Storage reaches from floor to ceiling

Along the perimeter, the full-height cabinet wall turns one side of the kitchen into a continuous storage run. It holds built-in appliances and wine storage, plus a large refrigerator and a combination of steam oven, baking oven and warming drawer. Even with those components set into the wall, there is still plenty of custom built-in kitchen storage left for everyday use, which keeps the counters clear and the room visually calm.

The framed fronts matter here. They prevent the tall wall from reading as a plain block and give each door a measured outline. That same detail runs through the lower cabinets, tying the wall units and the island together. In pictures, the gold-toned handles catch the light against the white fronts, while the deeper wood finish of the island gives the room a second register.

Appliances hidden inside the wall

The appliance zone is concentrated in one tall bank, which makes the room easier to read at a glance. Cooling, wine storage and oven functions sit together behind the cabinetry, leaving the rest of the kitchen open for preparation and serving. Because the storage is built in rather than added on, the wall keeps its clean vertical line all the way up to the ceiling.

That vertical line also works with the room’s light. Large windows bring in a soft wash across the cabinet fronts, and the ceiling spots pick out the grain of the oak veneer island and the polished surface of the worktop. The result is not busy; the eye moves from the pale wall units to the darker island and then to the dining area in the extension. That makes the luxury kitchen with island part of the architectural character rather than a loose finish.

The island and its stone-look surface

The main worktop is made from ceramic Estatuario, a ceramic countertop marble-look surface with a pale, veined appearance. It sits over both the wall run and the island, giving the kitchen a consistent surface for preparation and spill-prone tasks. Against the white fronts and oak veneer, the ceramic brings a sharper, cooler note and gives the room a clearer material order.

On the island, the cooktop is set into the work surface and paired with induction cooktop with ceiling extraction. The extraction stays out of sight above, so the island keeps its low, horizontal profile. That is what makes the centre of the room feel open rather than technically crowded: the equipment is there, but the visual weight stays with the stone-look top and the wood-clad base below.

Wood, paint and metal details in close-up

Seen up close, the kitchen is built from a limited set of materials, each used with care. Painted fronts in Cornforth White sit beside oak veneer, and the handles introduce a slim metallic accent without breaking the calm surface rhythm. The framed detailing gives the cabinet doors depth, especially where light from the windows catches the edges and highlights the joinery.

The island base shows the same restraint. The oak veneer is allowed to read clearly, without extra ornament, while the stone-look countertop overhangs just enough to define the working edge. In the images, the material contrast is strongest at the point where the pale top meets the darker wood, and that line carries through the rest of the room.

Everyday use, kept close at hand

This kitchen is designed around the way people move between cooking, storage and serving. The full-height cabinet wall keeps the appliances grouped together, the island gives a central place to prepare food, and the nearby table in the extension turns the room into a place where a tray can move straight from the worktop to the table. The fireplace in the extension adds another fixed point, so the kitchen reads as part of a larger living sequence rather than a single enclosed zone.

What makes the plan persuasive is its clarity. Nothing is left floating in the middle of the room, and nothing has to shout for attention. The cabinetry runs tall and straight, the island stays low and horizontal, and the ceramic countertop ties the two together with one continuous material language. Seen in full, it is a luxury kitchen with island that relies on proportion, storage and surface rather than display.
