Luxury open-plan living with kitchen island

The white surface of the kitchen island catches the light first. Around it, dark timber cabinetry runs in straight lines, while the open-plan room stretches back toward the living area and its built-in shelving. The project is presented here through a video and an inspiration book, but the images do the main work: they show how the kitchen island, the custom wall unit and the taller ceiling together shape one continuous interior.

Custom wall unit with open niches and a TV recess

The living room wall is handled as one large piece of joinery rather than a loose collection of cabinets. Open niches break up the darker timber faces, and a central recess gives space to the screen without making it dominate the room. That measured layout leaves the wall unit readable from across the open-plan living area. A nearby bank of windows brings in daylight and a view to the outside, with blinds softening the glass and keeping the room from feeling exposed.

The same piece of joinery also works as storage and display. Behind the darker fronts, glass elements and open compartments lighten the composition and interrupt the weight of the timber. The result is not busy. It is controlled, with enough variation in depth to make the wall feel built into the architecture rather than added later. As a custom wall unit, it anchors the living zone and gives the room a clear horizontal line.

A kitchen island drawn with clean edges

In the kitchen, the island stands out for its plain geometry. A pale countertop sits over darker cabinetry, and the contrast makes the island easy to read from the living room. Rounded cut-outs in the work surface add a subtle shift in detail, while the surrounding run of cabinets stays deliberately straight. The overall effect is calm, but not soft: the lines stay sharp, and the materials do the talking. This is a kitchen island that holds the centre of the room without crowding it.

Elsewhere in the kitchen, tall units rise behind the island and carry glass fronts that interrupt the darker doors. Those glazed sections let the storage read as part of the room, not as a closed block. The white worktop appears again at the sink zone, where the lighter surface cuts across the darker fronts and reflects the overhead light. Seen with the island, the kitchen forms a compact composition inside the larger open-plan living area.

Dark cabinetry against lighter surfaces

The strongest contrast in the project comes from the dark custom cabinetry and the pale planes around it. The blackened timber tones of the joinery sit against white walls, a white island top and lighter ceiling areas, so every edge reads clearly. That contrast is useful. It lets the storage recede where it should and stand forward where the room needs structure. The materials stay restrained, but the difference between them keeps the interior from flattening out.

Glass is used sparingly, which makes each glazed section noticeable. It appears in the kitchen cabinets and within the larger wall composition, where it breaks the mass of timber and creates lighter moments inside the storage. Those transparent areas also reflect light from the ceiling fixtures, adding small flashes across the darker surfaces. In a room with this much joinery, glass prevents the cabinetry from becoming too heavy.

Exposed ceiling beams and integrated light

Above the living and kitchen zones, the ceiling structure becomes part of the view. Exposed ceiling beams cross the room and draw the eye upward, while recessed spots and hanging fixtures mark out different areas below. The beams give the interior a clearer rhythm, especially where they meet the open floor plan. Instead of hiding the structure, the design lets it stay visible and uses the lighting to underline the span of the room.

Light changes the feel of the timber and the white surfaces as the day moves on. Ceiling spots wash the cabinetry and the island with a steady light, while the pendant fittings add a more focused pool above the central zone. In the living room, the brightness settles across the built-in shelving and the wall unit, leaving the deeper niches in shade. That contrast is what gives the interior its depth. The room is open, but each zone still has its own edge.

Living room, kitchen and view in one line

The project works because the living room does not sit apart from the kitchen. A seated area, the custom wall unit and the kitchen island all occupy the same open-plan field, connected by the ceiling beams and by the repetition of dark timber. The large windows reinforce that sense of one long room, and the blinds temper the view without cutting it off. From one end of the space, you can read the whole layout in a single line of sight.

That clarity is what makes the project effective as a portfolio piece. It shows how built-in shelving, a TV recess, dark custom cabinetry and a modern kitchen island can be arranged without clutter. The furnishing remains light enough to let the joinery lead, and the architecture does not need extra decoration to carry the room. The video and inspiration book add another layer, but the strongest message comes from the images: a measured open-plan interior where every visible surface has a job to do.

Why the details stay memorable

Small decisions carry the project. The rounded cut-outs in the island top, the open niches in the wall unit, the glass inserts in the storage, the exposed beams overhead: each one interrupts a straight line just enough to keep the eye moving. Nothing is overworked. The room relies on proportion, material contrast and the way light meets each surface. That is what holds the entire open-plan living area together and makes the kitchen island feel properly placed at its centre.
