Modern city garden with poolhouse and wellness

Low paving, straight pool edges and dense planting set the tone before the poolhouse even comes into view. The garden reads as a compact outdoor room, with the rectangular pool cutting a clear line through the centre and the surrounding surfaces kept deliberately calm. In this setting, the poolhouse wellness lounge becomes the anchor point: part shelter, part lounge, part place to move between water, shade and heat.

A poolhouse wellness lounge that sits between garden and water

The poolhouse wellness lounge is built from Douglas wood and set on a Millboard deck floor, which gives the structure a dry, measured base next to the water. Dark timber beams frame the canopy, while lighter wall planes under the roof keep the interior readable from the terrace. The result is not a closed garden room, but a sheltered zone with open sides, where the threshold between inside and outside stays visible. Wood slats soften the edges without hiding the structure.

From the terrace, the lounge area feels directly tied to the pool. The deck runs close to the water, so the route from lounging to swimming is short and unforced. A black-and-white palette appears in the contrast between the dark timber structure, white wall surfaces and pale paving, while the planting around the perimeter keeps the space from feeling hard or overdrawn. The poolhouse wellness lounge works because its parts are legible: timber, boards, light, and the line of the pool.

The rectangular pool as a clear horizontal line

The rectangular pool is one of the most explicit shapes in the project. Its straight sides and clean edge detailing give the garden a strong horizontal axis, and the pale water catches the light against the surrounding stone. The coping and paving are kept restrained, so attention stays on the geometry of the basin and the reflections at the surface. Around it, the garden reads in layers: terrace, pool edge, planting, and boundary wall.

Several views show how the pool relates to the rest of the setting. One angle places the water in front of dark timber cladding and a planted border; another brings the pool and overhang into the same frame, making the transition from sun to shade easy to read. The pool does not stand apart from the architecture. It sits alongside the poolhouse wellness lounge as part of one continuous outdoor composition, with the Millboard deck floor carrying the eye from the water toward the covered zone.

Shade, seating and a sheltered pause

Under the canopy, the project shifts from open garden to sheltered retreat. The lounge area is defined less by furniture than by enclosure: white walls, timber posts, recessed lighting and the underside of the roof create a compact place to sit after swimming or to stay out of direct sun. The wood slat privacy screen filters the view from the side, so the room feels protected without closing off the garden. That partial screen also keeps the darker timber frame from looking heavy.

The material contrast is what gives the lounge its character. Douglas wood brings a visible grain to the structure, while the Millboard deck floor reads as a practical surface underfoot. Together they form a base for the wellness setting, but they also give the eye a way to measure the space. The canopy, the support posts and the wall lights are arranged to keep the room calm at night, when the dark timber begins to merge with the garden boundary and the lit walls take over.

Spa under a canopy, placed as part of the route

The spa under a canopy is positioned within the covered zone rather than pushed to the edge of the garden, which makes it feel integrated into the sequence of movement. In several images it sits against a white wall, close to the structural timber and the side screen, so the surrounding architecture becomes part of the experience. The basin shape is clearly visible, but the setting matters just as much: dark ceiling beams above, pale wall behind, and the boundary of the garden beyond.

Because the spa under a canopy shares the same shelter as the lounge, the wellness area reads as one continuous space. The wall lights and round downlights in the roof keep the focus low and close to the surfaces. At the side, vertical wood slats filter views and pull the darker exterior tones into the covered room. Nothing here is overworked. The project relies on simple material relationships, and that restraint makes the spa zone feel deliberate rather than added on.

Inside the sauna, heat is written into the wood

The sauna interior changes the mood through material alone. Wooden wall cladding wraps the room, benches run along the sides, and a visible heating element adds a red glow to the planks. The door opening gives just enough of the outside edge to understand the transition from the black-and-white shell to the warm interior. The proportions are compact, but the timber surfaces and long benches make the room feel readable from the first glance.

There is no excess detail inside the sauna interior. The emphasis stays on the horizontal seating, the vertical wall boards and the heat source fixed to the wall. That clarity matters, because the room is not presented as a decorative feature but as part of the wider wellness layout. The same project language continues here: wood, light, line and enclosure. Seen from the doorway, the glowing interior feels set apart from the garden, yet still connected to the poolhouse wellness lounge by material and route.

Gray tiles and dark built-ins in the wet room

The gray tiled wet room appears as the most controlled interior surface in the sequence. Large tiles cover the walls, and a black built-in niche interrupts the gray plane with a sharper detail. A shower fitting is visible on the wall, which keeps the room anchored in use rather than presentation. The palette is reduced, but the effect is not cold: the darker insert and metal fixtures give the room a firm outline against the tile joints.

That wet room detail matters because it extends the project beyond the garden deck and into the practical side of the wellness programme. The gray tiled wet room sits in the same visual language as the rest of the scheme: squared edges, honest materials and a preference for clear surfaces. Seen beside the sauna interior and the spa under a canopy, it completes the sequence of water, heat and rinse without breaking the project’s visual discipline.

A compact outdoor wellness setting with clear boundaries

What holds the project together is the way each element keeps its own shape. The rectangular pool remains direct and legible. The poolhouse wellness lounge uses Douglas wood and a Millboard deck floor to define a sheltered place to sit. The spa under a canopy and the sauna interior each claim a distinct atmosphere, yet they are connected by the same structural frame and a limited palette of timber, tile and light. Even the garden planting is used as a border, not a distraction.

The result is a city garden that works through sequence rather than spectacle. From terrace to pool edge, from shaded lounge to spa, from sauna door to gray tiled wet room, the movement stays short and clear. That is where the project finds its strength: in the way the poolhouse wellness lounge links the outdoor water element to the more enclosed rooms, without losing the precision of the garden layout or the material rhythm that runs through it.
