Modern front garden with raised entrance

The gravel sets the tone before the house does. It runs in curved bands around planting beds, meets light-grey paving slabs near the terrace and frames a raised route up to the entrance. In this modern front garden, the change in level is not hidden away; it is used as part of the composition. Steel-toned steps cut through the planting, while clipped hedges hold the edges in place and keep the route clear.

Raised entrance steps and the terrace line

The raised garden steps are the first strong gesture. Their steel finish catches the eye against the softer surfaces around them, especially where the steps sit between low planting and gravel. From the street side, the climb feels measured rather than abrupt, with each tread setting up the next part of the approach. The terrace connection is visible too: pale slabs sit close to the house, giving the entrance zone a firmer base and linking the garden to the doorway.

That change in height gives the front garden structure without making it feel heavy. The steps are wide enough to read as part of the path rather than a separate object, and the gravel beside them keeps the edges visually open. Close up, the contrast between the steel finish, the pale paving and the fine texture of the gravel gives the entrance a clear sequence. It is an orderly move through the front garden, with every surface doing a different job.

A gravel path with curved edges through the planting

The gravel path with curved edges softens the geometry of the plot. Instead of straight runs, the route bends around the beds and returns to the house in a slower line. That curve helps the planting read as a series of separate pockets, not one continuous strip. The result is a front garden with gravel that feels planned from the ground up: the path, the borders and the step line all follow one another without crossing each other’s language.

In the bed shapes, the organic line is more visible than the plants themselves. Rounded corners pull the gravel inward, while the low borders keep the planting from spreading into the circulation zone. The scheme works because the materials stay simple. Gravel, stone and steel are used as the main surface language, with the planting filling the spaces between them. Seen from the side, the path acts almost like a ribbon that guides the eye toward the entrance and then back along the boundary.

Trimmed hedges front yard and low groundcover

Several planting beds are cut tight at the edges, with trimmed hedges front yard style forms that hold their line through the season. They sit low enough not to block the view of the steps, but they still give the garden a visible structure. Beneath and around them, the groundcover softens the hard edges of the gravel and stone. The planting is not used as filler; it is placed to give depth to the route and to keep the front garden reading as a sequence of layers.

What stands out is the discipline of the green shapes. The hedges are clipped into compact blocks, and the spaces between them are kept open with gravel. That contrast makes the beds easy to read from a distance. It also gives the entrance a measured pace. As you move closer, the textures shift from sharp stone to fine leaf to smooth paving slabs, which keeps the front garden active without becoming busy.

Steel finish, stone and timber at the boundary

A timber boundary with straight vertical lines anchors the side of the garden. It sits behind the planting rather than competing with it, and the narrow slats give the edge a calm background. Near it, dark metal details and the steel finish on the steps repeat the same restrained material palette. The house itself sits with red roof tiles and dark window frames above the garden, which makes the lighter paving and gravel read even more clearly in front of it.

The boundary treatment matters because it closes the view without shutting it down. The timber screen is solid enough to define the plot, but the vertical rhythm keeps it from feeling blunt. In front of it, the planted beds and gravel strips carry the eye toward the entrance and then back to the path. This modern front garden uses those repeated lines well: timber, steel and stone each mark a different edge, but none of them competes for attention.

Why the layout reads so clearly from the street

From the street side, the composition is easy to follow. Gravel defines the ground plane, the raised entrance steps announce the change in level, and the clipped hedges make the route legible at once. The curved edges prevent the plan from becoming rigid, while the pale terrace slabs near the house give the entrance a more settled point of arrival. It is a front garden with paving slabs where the hard surfaces are not hidden; they are placed to guide movement and frame the planting.

The project is strongest in the way the elements meet. Stone meets gravel without a harsh line. Steel steps sit beside low hedges rather than towering above them. Timber marks the boundary in a straight rhythm that echoes the order of the planting beds. Nothing here depends on decoration. The effect comes from proportion, from the spacing of the paths, and from the way the modern front garden holds the transition between street, garden and house in a single view.

Seen as a whole, the garden turns a small approach zone into a clear entry sequence. A gravel path with curved edges leads the eye, the raised garden steps lift the route, and the structured planting keeps the setting grounded. The house behind it gains a quieter foreground, shaped by gravel, steel-toned treads and clipped greenery. For a front garden, that combination does exactly what it needs to do: it gives the entrance a readable path and leaves the materials to do the talking.
