Villa H: Een modern landhuis met rieten dak en grote glaspartijen

The thatched roof is immediately visible in the way the project is framed. The silhouette of Villa H emerges clearly through its distinctive roof, where layers of woven thatch extend with an organic sweep just beyond the façade. This natural roofing marks the house’s perimeter with thick eaves that punctuate the building’s profile against the sky. Below, the white-painted masonry reveals subtle textural allowances; its plaster finish bears faint unevenness that hints at the manual application behind its clean surface.

thatched roof as the architectural starting point

Wooden vertical slats form a screen-like rhythm around the terraces, offering tactile depth to the open outdoor areas. These warm wooden elements harmonize with the smoother brick expanses beneath the protective overhang of the thatched roof. Concrete accents appear as solid bases and framing components, balancing the more organic materials above and avoiding visual heaviness.

Glazed walls dissolve boundaries between inside and forest

Floor-to-roof expanses of glass stretch upward, framed with slender mullions that almost vanish, inviting uninterrupted views into the woodland beyond. The vertical panes direct the eye toward the soaring thatched canopy, enhancing a spatial connection that anchors the interior to its natural setting. Changeable patterns formed by branches and leaves play across these surfaces throughout the day.

Living spaces emphasize openness and material subtlety

The fireplace inhabiting the sitting area is restrained in silhouette—a simple rectangular hearth that focuses attention on warmth rather than ornamentation. Surrounding furnishings maintain an earthy palette, wielding wood frames, soft linens, and natural fibers which correspond with exposed ceiling beams and neutral-toned flooring. Arrangement here avoids visual clutter, fostering clear vistas through the glass to the ever-present greenscape.

Bedrooms framed for filtered light and calm views

Quiet rooms rely on filtered daylight filtering through foliage outside, their pale surfaces softly animated by shifting shadows of leaves. Windows are placed to balance privacy and openness, offering glimpses of sky and forest without exposing interiors to direct outside gaze. Textiles and finishes remain muted, enhancing the subdued light and the tranquil atmosphere within.

Interiors blend structural elements with softer textures

A gently curving staircase presents a narrow black metal handrail contrasted by warm wooden steps. This combination negotiates transition between floors with a sculptural gesture that invites touch and movement alike. Concrete floors underpin the interior with understated greys, chosen for their matte quality and textural interest rather than shine. The kitchen maintains the restrained material theme, marked by smooth cabinetry flanked by wooden edges that echo the broader array of natural accents throughout. Countertops in polished concrete create tactile variation without strong color contrasts. That makes the thatched roof part of the architectural character rather than a loose finish.

Terraces extend living areas under naturally protective roofing

Running beneath the thatched eaves, terraces form outdoor rooms sheltered from rain and direct sun. Furnishings complement the interior palette—woven fabrics and wooden frames reference textures found inside. A dining table designed for six promotes fluidity between indoors and outdoors, with flooring transitions carefully managed to enhance this connection. Seating is arranged to keep walkways clear yet accommodate intimate groupings shaded by the roof’s generous projection.

Outdoor furnishings map back to indoor materiality

Clusters of seating echo interior planning, blending subtle upholstery with natural-colored timber and woven fibers. The overhead thatch reveals its craft in woven linear patterns, contrasting with the firm brick walls around, underscoring skillful construction and the tactile qualities integral to the house’s character.

Subtle lighting emphasizes texture and form after dark

Lighting fixtures take restrained forms, designed not as focal points but as tools to reveal and accentuate surfaces. Soft illumination traces wooden grains, while diffuse spotlights temper the cool hardness of concrete surfaces. Low-level lights carefully illuminate the straw roof, sustaining the natural material presence and extending the living space ambiance well into evening hours.

Spatial flow guided by arcs and thoughtful proportions

Rounded doorways frame transitions and views, creating moments of pause while guiding movement through the house and toward exterior areas. Long corridors strike a balance between enclosure and openness, punctuated by daylight entries that maintain visual interest and rhythm. Vertical timber strips intersect horizontal expanses, bringing subtle complexity and preventing flatness in sightlines.

Simplicity defines the kitchen’s form and finishes

The kitchen’s clean front cabinetry dispenses with hardware, emphasizing clean lines. Wooden accents along edges provide textural warmth, harmonizing with stair detailing and furniture. Appliances are integrated flush with cabinets, preserving a smooth, continuous surface. Daylight from forest-facing windows bathes the space, reinforcing connection to nature and complementing the restrained palette.

Natural materials root the house within its forest setting

A palette of neutral and earth tones draws on textures from the thatch, wood grains, and brick, enhanced by smooth concrete contrasts. Glass surfaces reflect and refract light and landscape, softly blending indoors with outdoors. This understated layering avoids literal imitation, instead creating a nuanced dialogue between house and site through material presence and spatial experience. That makes the thatched roof part of the architectural character rather than a loose finish.
