Pines, a few broad-crowned trees, and an open stretch of landscape set the tone before the house comes into view. The architecture takes its cue from that setting. Gray masonry accents, contrasting window frames, and simple vertical and horizontal lines shape a modern villa with large glazing that reads clearly against the trees. The composition is restrained, but never flat; the lines echo trunks, branches, and the long edge of the terrace.

Lines borrowed from the surrounding trees

The first impression is built from repetition. Tall verticals in the window openings answer the straight trunks around the plot, while the overhangs and masonry courses stretch the house horizontally in a way that recalls the canopy above. The result is not a literal imitation of the site. Instead, the wood and glass facade uses a few precise moves to connect the building to its setting. Even the contrasts between the frames and the wall surfaces are kept sharp enough to hold that reading.

Gray masonry accents give the exterior its weight, while the darker and lighter frame colors break up the volume and keep the elevations from feeling closed. This is where the simple vertical and horizontal lines do their work. They set up a clear rhythm across the walls, and that rhythm continues at the edges of the openings. The house does not rely on ornament. It uses proportion, alignment, and the spacing of materials to stay in step with the wooded plot.

A terrace that seems to lift off the ground

Instead of settling heavily into the site, the house stands on a terrace with continuous paving that appears to separate it from the ground below. That detail changes how the building is read. The terrace becomes a thin threshold rather than a hard boundary, and the garden keeps its own profile around it. Much of the existing vegetation on the plot was retained, so the planting still carries the irregular character of the place rather than a fully reshaped garden.

The surrounding outdoor area follows the same logic. Its surface is kept close to the rolling quality of the open landscape behind the plot, rather than being forced into a formal layout. The terrace with continuous paving helps the house sit lightly among the trees, while the preserved trunks around it keep their role in the view. From the outside, the building feels as if it has been placed carefully rather than imposed.

Large glazing opens the living spaces

Inside, the relationship with the landscape becomes direct. Large glazing pulls the trees and the open view into the room, especially in the bright double-height living room views. The tall volume gives the daylight room to spread, while the glass surfaces widen the sightlines toward the garden and the open land beyond. What you notice first is the depth of the view: trunks in the foreground, open ground farther out, and a line of horizon that stays visible from the main living space.

The double-height living room is less about spectacle than about reach. The room gains its presence from vertical space, but the glazing keeps that volume connected to the ground outside. The eye moves easily from the floor to the upper edges of the windows and then out again to the trees. Because the indoor outdoor floor continuity is kept exact, the view is not cut off by a material change at the threshold. The room and terrace read as part of one sequence.

Material shifts that stay quiet

The palette is limited and practical. Masonry in gray tones meets frame colors that stand out against the walls, and the wood elements add a warmer note without changing the overall restraint of the composition. The materials are not arranged to call attention to themselves individually. They work through contrast, especially where the glazing interrupts the wall surfaces and where the overhangs cast a darker line above the openings.

That same discipline appears in the interior. Light tile surfaces, white walls, and clear edges keep the rooms visually open, while the floor finish continues through inside and outside without a break. The indoor outdoor floor continuity does more than connect two surfaces. It makes the transition legible at a glance, so the terrace does not feel like an added platform but like an extension of the living area. This is one of the reasons the house stays so closely tied to its setting.

Designed in 3D, delivered before the end of 2014

The entire design was drawn and developed in 3D, which gave the clients a clear view of the house throughout the process. That matters in a project where small shifts in line, opening size, and material contrast make such a difference. A model that could be studied from multiple angles helped keep the decisions precise, from the relation between the terrace and the ground to the way the frames cut across the masonry.

The house was delivered just before the end of 2014. By then, the main ideas were already visible in built form: a modern villa with large glazing, a terrace with continuous paving, and a strong outdoor-indoor relationship shaped by the setting. The architecture does not try to dominate the plot. It uses simple vertical and horizontal lines, gray masonry accents, and long views through the living room to keep the landscape present in everyday use.
