Thatched-roof villa with wooden folding walls

The thatched roof draws the eye first, its deep edge softening the profile of the house before the view lands on the wide wooden folding walls below. They open the living space toward the terrace and turn the threshold into a direct passage rather than a stop. Dark floor tiles inside continue the calm line of the room, while the terrace outside is set out in large grey slabs that sit close to the brick base of the villa.

The roofline does the first work

Seen from the garden side, the roof gives the house its strongest outline. The thatch sits above brickwork and lighter wall surfaces, so the material contrast is clear even from a distance. Large glazed openings break up the façade and pull daylight deep into the interior. The result is a rural-modern style that reads through material rather than decoration. Nothing here depends on excess; the shape of the roof, the brick, and the glass already do enough.

Wooden folding walls open the room to the terrace

The wooden folding walls are the most active element in the project. When opened, they create a full opening toward the terrace and remove the usual edge between inside and outside. The indoor-outdoor connection is not suggested, it is built into the layout. Furniture can sit close to the opening, as shown by the table and chairs near the glass, without blocking the view. Light moves across the floor and out toward the paving, so the room reads as one continuous field.

A threshold made of light, not steps

At the terrace side, the seamless terrace transition is defined by the level change that is absent. The living space runs straight onto the outdoor surface, so circulation stays open and direct. This is where the project’s idea becomes visible in daily use: doors fold away, the terrace becomes part of the route, and the house no longer ends at the frame. The large glass openings keep the connection open even when the walls are closed.

Brick, glass and timber keep the elevation grounded

Brickwork gives the villa weight at eye level. Against it, the large glass openings and the lighter detailing around the openings bring in a sharper line. The façade does not rely on ornament; its interest comes from the way the masonry, glazing and timber meet. From the outside, the opening sequence is easy to read. From the inside, the same openings frame the terrace, the borders and the garden structure beyond. The project keeps both sides visible at once.

The terrace is laid out as part of the house

Large-format tiles give the terrace a steady surface next to the building. Their scale suits the open span of the folding walls and the broad glazed parts of the elevation. A wooden table and chairs sit on the terrace, close enough to the house to feel connected to the interior but far enough out to leave the opening clear. The paving lines are neat and measured, which helps the terrace work as a usable extension of the living space rather than a separate outdoor zone.

Inside, the view stays on the room and the opening

From the interior, the dark tiled floor sets up a quiet base for the table in the centre of the room. Beyond it, the opening to the terrace becomes the main visual movement. The eye passes from the table to the glass, then out to the tiled surface and the thatched roof above. That chain of views is simple, but it holds the whole composition together. The room feels planned around the opening, not added to it after the fact.

What stands out is the way the project uses everyday elements to organise the house. A roof with a clear silhouette, a brick shell, folding timber, and a terrace of large tiles are enough to shape the experience. The rural character comes from the thatch and masonry; the contemporary reading comes from the glass, the wide openings and the clean terrace line. Together they create a house that opens and closes without losing its form.

Material cues that define the project

Rougher textures sit next to smoother ones throughout the house. The thatch softens the roof edge, the brick keeps the walls grounded, and the glass cuts across both with a clear reflective surface. Timber appears in the folding walls and in the terrace furniture, adding another layer to the composition without taking over. The outdoor paving, with its large slabs, keeps the base of the house visually steady and gives the transition to the garden a clean reading.

Because the openings are wide, the relationship between terrace and living space remains visible even when you stand inside. The result is less about framing a view than about letting the two zones share one axis. The project uses that axis well: from the table inside to the terrace outside, and from the terrace back to the brick and thatch above it. That repeated line of sight is what gives the house its clarity.
