Modern garden with mature trees

Dense green canopies already set the tone before the house came into view. In this modern garden with mature trees, the planting was started first, then the residence was built around it, and only after that was the rest of the garden finished. That sequence is visible in the way the trees anchor the site now: their trunks rise from neat beds, their crowns frame the lawn, and their scale gives the paved areas something to hold against.

Mature trees as the first layer of the garden

The decision to plant mature trees before construction left a clear mark on the composition. Their height brings instant weight to the garden, but the effect is not loose or overgrown. The trees are set in controlled openings, sometimes in a rectangular planter, sometimes directly in the ground, so the overall field still reads as ordered. Around them, clipped edges and straight runs of grass keep the planting legible from the terrace and from the swimming area garden.

One image shows the placement of a mature tree in progress, lifted by a line and held around the root ball. It is a practical moment, but it also explains the project logic. The tree is not an afterthought. It is a fixed point. Once the building was in place, the garden could be completed around that earlier move, and the result is a site where the large trees feel integrated from the start rather than added at the end.

Geometric planting beds and lawn composition

The planting beds are drawn with straight edges, and the lawn works as a calm open surface between them. This is a modern garden with mature trees, but the structure is what keeps the greenery clear. Narrow strips of planting repeat along the perimeter, while broader beds hold grasses and low shrubs. The repetition gives the garden a measured rhythm without making it rigid. From different angles, the eye moves from trunk to bed to lawn, then back to the stone boundaries that frame the space.

Near the house, the planting stays tight to the built edges. Young trees appear in a row along the façade-side garden, while ornamental grasses soften the line of the natural stone wall. Their upright blades break the blocky geometry of the masonry and catch light in short, vertical strokes. The beds beside them are neat rather than decorative, with enough room for each group of plants to read as a distinct layer.

Natural stone retaining wall and sharp edge detailing

A natural stone retaining wall runs through the garden as a strong horizontal line. It is built from large blocks, and that mass gives the garden edge a sense of permanence. The wall is not hidden by planting; instead, it remains visible as part of the composition. A gravel strip at the foot of the wall and a line of small paving stones create a change in texture, so the hard surfaces do more than divide levels. They shape the route through the garden.

That same natural stone retaining wall appears close to the water and along the planted margins, where it holds the site together visually. The stone surface sits beside lighter terrace materials and the blue of the swimming area, making the shift from one zone to another easy to read. The contrast is practical, but it also gives the garden its clarity: stone, water, planting and paving each keep their own outline.

Planting that settles into the wall

Along the stonework, the planting is denser and lower. Ornamental grasses cluster in rounded masses, and their movement softens the hard line of the wall without blurring it. The stems rise against the masonry, then fall back into the gravel edge and the bordering paving. This is where the project feels most precise. Nothing is overfilled, and nothing is left bare. The plants are placed so that the wall remains visible while the border gains depth.

Terrace transitions beside the swimming area

The swimming area garden is set next to a terrace with plank flooring, so the transition from water to seating surface is easy to follow. The pool water reads as a light blue rectangle beside the straight terrace edge, and the whole zone stays low and level. A stone border runs alongside the water, while the adjacent surfaces shift from timber to paving to planting. These changes are subtle, but they give each zone its own identity without breaking the view across the garden.

Another image shows a grey rectangular planter holding a tree beside the water. That detail ties the pool zone back to the larger planting concept. The planter is crisp and compact, yet the tree above it adds height and shadow. It keeps the terrace from feeling detached from the rest of the garden, and it repeats the project’s main idea: mature planting is used as structure, not ornament. The result is a modern garden with mature trees where the water edge still belongs to the same visual system.

Ornamental grasses modern in a measured planting rhythm

Ornamental grasses modern in character appear throughout the garden, especially near the stone walls and in the tighter beds by the house. They are planted in dense clumps, so their form stays readable from a distance. The grasses do not compete with the trees; they work underneath them. Their fine texture is useful in a garden that relies on straight lines, because it gives the planting a softer surface while keeping the outline of each bed intact.

Seen across the lawn, the grasses, young shrubs and mature trunks create a layered field. The taller trees provide the vertical markers, the mid-level planting fills the edges, and the grass opens the centre. This order is easy to read in the photographs. It also explains why the garden feels settled even though the house was built after the trees were planted. The landscape was not simply planted around a finished building. It was staged in steps, and each step left a visible trace.

How the finished garden reads from the house

From the glazed side of the residence, the garden reads in bands: stone at the edge, then planting, then lawn, then the taller tree layer beyond. The broad openings between the beds keep the views long, while the straight edges make the planting look deliberate rather than scattered. The natural stone retaining wall, the neat planting beds and the swimming area garden all sit within that clear composition, and the mature trees give the whole scene its depth.

What stands out most is the order of the build itself. First the trees, then the house, then the completed garden. That sequence is not hidden; it is the reason the site feels settled. The mature trees already had a place before the house was finished, so the garden could be shaped around something living and established. In the final view, the terraces, stone edges, water and structured planting all confirm that early decision.
