Historic house renovation

The preserved exterior sets the tone immediately: a historic house kept intact at the front, while the rear opens up to glass, daylight and a new living zone. That contrast carries through the whole historic house renovation, where the original shell stays visible and the interior has been fully renewed around it. Dark window frames, white masonry and the sharp line of the extension make the old and new read separately, without competing for attention.

Preserved outside, rebuilt inside

Keeping the facade untouched meant the work had to happen elsewhere, and the result is clearest once you move indoors. Every room was adapted and fully renovated, with new technical systems integrated into the house as part of the interior renovation project. Walls and roof were fully insulated, bringing the building in line with current energy requirements. The finish is restrained, but the amount of work behind it is substantial: surfaces, services and detailing all had to be resolved within an existing structure.

From the street-facing side, the house still holds on to its historic character. The rear tells a different story. A modern extension with glass was added at the back, introducing a horizontal volume with a rectangular overhang and large openings. The extension does not imitate the old building; it gives the house a second layer, one that is legible in the plan and in the daylight it draws deep into the interior.

Daylight pulled into the kitchen and lounge

The new rear zone is arranged around a light-filled kitchen and living area, where broad glazing frames the garden and terrace. Instead of splitting the space into separate rooms, the extension gathers daily life into one clear volume. The minimal kitchen design reinforces that openness: dark cabinetry sits low and flat, while the marble countertop introduces a lighter surface line that catches the daylight from the glass behind it. The materials are few, but each one has a clear role.

In the lounge, the view is the main event. Large glazed openings extend the eye toward the landscaped garden and terrace, so the room changes with the weather and the hour. The floor runs cleanly from one zone to the next, and the ceiling lighting stays discreet, leaving the glass and the garden to carry the room. This is where the historic house renovation becomes most visible in daily use: the back of the house is no longer a closed edge, but a sequence of openings and views.

A kitchen defined by contrast

The kitchen reads as a compact composition of dark fronts, pale stone and reflected light. There is no decorative excess to interrupt the surfaces. The marble countertop stretches across the units and gives the room a long, grounded line, while the surrounding glazing keeps the space from feeling enclosed. Even the joinery feels deliberate, with the cabinetry set back so the worktop and the light from outside take the lead. It is a measured approach, and it suits the broader project.

At the same time, the room is not isolated from the rest of the house. It sits within the open rear extension, close to the lounge and the outdoor terrace, so movement stays fluid between cooking, sitting and looking out. The glazed wall is not just a visual feature; it changes how the room is used, pulling the garden into the day-to-day rhythm of the house. In that sense, the historic house renovation is as much about spatial sequence as about materials.

Exterior work tied to the garden

The outside spaces were treated as part of the whole. A neat garden layout, straight terrace paving and low planting sit against the new rear volume, keeping the ground plane clear and readable. The landscaping does not try to compete with the architecture. It supports it. Rectangular paving lines lead along the facade, and the grass and planted borders soften the hard edges of the extension. From inside, these elements form the foreground to the larger views through the glass.

That relationship between house and garden is strongest where the extension meets the terrace. The overhang creates a sheltered edge, while the glazed openings keep the threshold visually open. It is a simple move, but an effective one. The rear of the house gains depth, and the outdoor area feels connected to the living spaces rather than separated from them. For a historic house renovation, that connection is often what makes the new work feel settled.

Technical upgrades hidden behind the finish

Much of the most important work is invisible. New techniques were installed throughout the building, and the insulation of the walls and roof was fully renewed. Those interventions are not there for display, yet they shape how the house performs and how the rooms can be used. The project keeps the old envelope readable, but the construction behind it has been brought up to current standards. That means the finishing can stay calm and precise, without exposing the technical layer.

The same attention runs through the exterior and interior finish. The wooden rear structure was executed in detail and accommodates a fitness room and a garage, adding functions without disturbing the reading of the main house. It is a practical addition, but also an architectural one: the timber volume gives the rear of the property another material note, set against glass, masonry and the planted garden. In this historic house renovation, every part seems measured against the next.

Rooms that rely on light rather than ornament

The bathroom follows the same discipline. A glazed shower screen, a built-in washbasin niche and pale tiled surfaces keep the room clear and uncluttered. Light falls across the tiles and the recessed details, making the proportions easy to read. There is no need for heavy decoration when the surfaces, the niche and the lighting already define the space. It is a modest room in scale, but it shares the same exacting finish as the larger living areas.

Seen as a whole, the house moves from preserved exterior to renewed interior, from solid masonry to glazed rear volume, and from technical upgrade to carefully finished room. The project never loses sight of the original building, yet it clearly changes how the house works from day to day. That combination of preservation, extension and renewed interior planning is what gives this historic house renovation its character: not a single gesture, but a chain of precise decisions across the whole property.
