Vacation home on Mallorca
Rural minimalism with authentic Spanish feel.
Renovation project of an old villa.
The property
The original detached house is somewhat tucked away in a walled garden within walking distance of the beach. It dates from the early 1960s and was erected as a residence/atelier for an artist. An area of 400 m2 in 2 levels, a swimming pool and a sizeable garden.
Client’s wish
We have a connection with the environment. This house has potential, but needs to be updated to meet all our needs of a vacation home. Lots of ‘ friends and family’ coming to stay, so keep it practical. However, we want to keep a Spanish vibe.
Concept
Setting a certain vibe can often be in small things. Less is more…. The typical light, a particular use of materials, a curve, a specific object.
We break out the walls on the first floor and include the indoor gallery in the living room. This creates one large living space with room for a kitchen and a large log table. We turn the salon 180 degrees. There is now direct contact with garden and pool. Since most of life takes place outside, there will be a shaded area with outdoor kitchen, in the far corner of the garden. From that point you have a nice view of the house. New bathrooms are being added upstairs. Everything is being tightened and rearranged. By introducing round passages above as well, here too, that typical Spanish atmosphere is created.
Restored porticos and garden
The house has several porticos, where you can dine, hang out or enjoy the setting sun. The neglected garden and porticos are being carefully restored. The old Canariensis palms were given more space so that they can be fully appreciated.
Collaboration with Gorg de Mar, Palma and H&S interior design.
