The design is one of the first “contemporary” homes in The Hamptons. The home was designed by George Nelson with Gordon Chadwick. Nelson was a famous furniture designer and head of design for Herman Miller.  As background, the home was originally designed and built on the beach for the family of activist and preservationist, Dick Johnson.  It was eventually sold when they were older with the understanding that it would not be torn down, but the new owners started to tear it down anyway.  When Dick Johnson found out, he got permission from Nelson/Chadwick to rebuild the house. Dick Johnson was a huge activist in land preservation in Montauk and he used to hold “save Montauk” community meetings at the original house.  He is considered the one responsible for much of the preserved land in Montauk. The home was owned and built by one of the most avid land preservationists who can be partially credited for what Montauk is today.  Lauren Rottet focused on the home’s unique architectural features, such as the hexagonal shape, interior shingled columns and ceilings, domed skylights over the garage, corridors, bathrooms.  Lauren’s summer residence showcases her amazing love of art and furniture collected over several years, including going in and out of shops in The Hamptons.  Recently, Lauren Rottet then created a line of furniture just for the house called The Montauk Collection (which is part of her namesake, Rottet Collection).
